Bulldogs Keep Argos Winless in Frontier Conference play
Saturday, January 26 2008
By GEORGE GEISE
Great Falls Tribune Sports Editor

Two basketball teams entered Friday night's Frontier Conference game badly needing a victory, but only the Montana Western Bulldogs played like a squad desperate to break a slump.

The Bulldogs gave rookie coach Steve Keller his first league victory with a 72-57 romp over the University of Great Falls before about 700 fans at McLaughlin Center.

"We played good defense against a good team. We deserved to win," said Keller, whose team improved to 1-5 in Frontier action, 8-12 overall.

"Give Western all the credit," said losing coach Steve Silsby, whose team fell to 0-6, 4-13. "They came out and got after it, and I'll take the blame for the way we started. We weren't ready to play."

Western blew out to a 33-13 lead after 17 minutes and UGF never got closer than 10 the rest of the way.

Keller was disappointed that his team had given up almost 86 points per game in its first five league games, so he drilled the Bulldogs on defense all week.

"We didn't shoot the basketball for three days," he said. "We just went back to defensive principles. The guys came out and shut down the guy they were guarding."

The only Argo who was effective offensively was 6-3 senior wing Cory Brothers, who scored 15 of his 22 points after intermission. But by then, the battle had been lost.

Sophomore point guard Layne Glaus paced the Bulldogs with 22 points. He's one of the few point guards in any league who routinely leads his team in scoring.

"I can go out and get 20 if coach wants me to, or I can shoot zero times if that's what he wants," said the 6-foot Glaus, a former prep star at Whitehall.

Glaus didn't need to shoot often against UGF since he spent much of his time at the foul line. He sank 16 of 18 free throws, as the Argos were forced to foul the player with the ball. Most of the time, that was Glaus, who drilled 12 foul shots the final 7 minutes, 35 seconds.

Aaron Sims, an active 6-6 forward, contributed 20 points and eight rebounds for Western, and 6-2 guard Chad Myers had 16 points.

Western outscored UGF 32-7 at the foul line, after each team sank just three free throws the first half.

Silsby was critical of the officiating crew, which called a total of 32 fouls the second half after only seven infractions were whistled the first 20 minutes.

"I just wish they would be consistent," Silsby said. "They were letting the hand-checks and bumps go the first half, then they called everything the second half."
