Wednesday, October 17 2007
The University of Montana Western men’s basketball team will tip-off their 2007-2008 season Thursday, Oct. 18, 2007 against the University of Lethbridge in a non-conference game.

Tip-off is 8 p.m. from the Straugh Gymnasium on the Montana Western campus.

Lethbridge is 2-3 on the season in non-conference games. Last year, the two teams opened the Montana Western season with the Bulldogs winning in overtime 92-90.

The game also marks the debut of Steve Keller as head coach of the Bulldogs. He is only the fourth head coach at Montana Western since 1940. Keller takes over from Mark Durham who is now the university’s athletic director.

“I am excited to be a part of this program,” said Keller. “Both of my sons played here so I have seen a lot of Montana Western basketball. I love Dillon. It is a great place live and coach.”

Seven players return from last year’s 8-20 team. Keller signed three players in the off-season.

“I like our team chemistry,” added Keller. “We had a scrimmage on Saturday and I liked what I saw. The kids get along and play hard.”

The Bulldogs under Keller will continue with an up-tempo style of basketball.

“I like that style of basketball,” said Keller. “We have talented shooters andwill shoot the three’s but, we also have very talented post players and will have a good inside

Aaron Sims (6’6”), a senior from Birmingham, Alabama and Gus McDonald (6’2”), a sophomore from St. Ignatius, Mont. both averaged in double figures last season. Sims averaged 11 points a game while McDonald averaged 11.4. Sims was second on the team in rebounding with 5.2 rebounds per game.

Sims and McDonald along with senior Zach Pitts (6’0”) of Ronan, Mont., junior Chad Myers (6’2”) of Troy, Mont. and Daniel Creech (6’6”) of Stevensville, Mont. are the starting five in the season opener against Lethbridge.

Rounding out the Bulldog roster are Layne Glaus (6’0”) sophomore from Whitehall, Mont., Garrett Fink (6’5”) from Helena, Mont., Bob Neiman (6’8”) from Plains, Mont., Alex Head (6’9”) from Pocatello, Idaho, and Dovydas Retkus (6’7”) from Plunge, Lithuania.

“I really like the look of this team,” said Keller. “We have a good combination of both inside and outside players. I like our shooters and our post players. We can throw the ball inside and they can score. Most of all, I like the depth of this team. There are ten guys who can contribute and play.”

The Bulldogs were picked to finish sixth in the Frontier Conference in pre-season poll of the league’s coaches.
