Bulldogs Host Minot State

The Montana Western Bulldogs host the Minot State Beavers in a non-conference men’s college basketball game Saturday, Dec.1, 2007. The game tips off at 2 p.m. from the Straugh Gymnasium.

The Minot State game will be broadcast in southwest Montana on KDBM Radio and on Internet from men’s basketball page on the Montana Western web site.

The Bulldogs are 3-7 after going 1-2 over Thanksgiving weekend. Montana Western beat MSU-Northern 82-50 and lost to Minot State 59-67 and Dickinson State 74-64.

At Minot the Bulldogs traded points with the Beavers until losing a 12 point lead late in the second half. Chad Myers led Western in with 13 points followed by Daniel Creech with 12 and Aaron Sims with 11. Creech led in rebounds with nine boards for the night.

The Bulldogs face the Beavers in their first home game after three weeks on the road.

Minot Stat is a NAIA Division II school and a member of the Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC). The Beavers they are 3-4 so far this season.

The Bulldogs lost to Minot State 83-65 last year at Dillon. Minot leads the all-time series with Montana Western 4-1. The Beavers only loss to the Bulldogs was a 74-64 loss in 1997.

Joe Gathings leads the Beavers in scoring with 18 ppg. Minot averages 81.8 ppg and gives up 82.2.

Layne Glaus and Aaron Sims lead the Bulldogs in scoring with 11 ppg each. Sims leads the Bulldogs in rebounds averaging 7.3 per game, followed by Daniel Creech with 5.6.

UMW averages 69.5 ppg and gives up 70.3 points per game.

Bulldogs Go 1-2 on North Dakota Trip

The Bulldogs traveled to North Dakota for three games over the Thanksgiving Break. They lost to Minot State 59-67 on Wednesday night. The Bulldogs then played two games at the Sam MIlanovich Classic. UMW lost to Dickinson State 74-64 and beat MSU-Northern 82-50.

Against Minot, the Bulldogs battled on even terms with the Beavers in the first half. Minot led 33-31 at the break.

Garrett Fink's 3 gave Montana Western its first lead of the game early in the second half. His shot was part of a 12-6 run the Bulldogs' generated out of the break to lead 43-39.

The Beavers answered that run with a 17-4 run that gave them a 59-47 lead with 4:49 left.

The Bulldogs struggled at the free throw line hitting only eight of 15.

Chad Myers led Western with 13 points followed by Daniel Creech with 12 and Aaron Sims with 11. Creech led the Bulldogs on the boards with nine rebounds.

Playing Dickinson for the second in a week, the Bulldogs took control early in the first half. Montana Western went on an 11-0 run to lead 26-14 mid-way through the first half and led 39-28 at the break.

Dickinson came out red-hot in the second half. A 27-4 run over a seven minute span in the second half carried Dickinson to the come from behind win. The Blue Hawks hit 73% from the field in the second half.

Aaron Sims led the Bulldogs with 17 points and five rebounds. Layne Glaus and Chad Myers added 12 points apiece.

In their final game of the North Dakota trip, the Bulldogs downed Frontier Conference rival Montana State-Northern 82-50. The loss was the Lights first loss of the season.

The Bulldogs led from the opening tip. UMW led 45-26 at the break.

The Bulldogs hit 53% from the field including nine three pointers and held Northern to a chilly 31%.

Chad Myers led the Bulldogs with 19 including five three-pointers. Danie Creech was next with 16 points. Aaron Sims followed with 15 points and 13 rebounds and Layne Glaus added 14.

The Bulldogs host Minot State Saturday afternoon.

Bulldogs Play Three in North Dakota

The University of Montana Western Bulldog basketball team travels to North Dakota for three games

The Bulldogs travel to Minot, N.D. to face the Minot State Beavers Wednesday, Nov. 21 at 7 p.m.

On Friday, Nov. 23 and Saturday, Nov. 24, UMW will compete in the Milanovich Classic hosted by Dickinson State University of Dickinson, N.D.

On Friday, Bulldogs face the host Blue Hawks at 7 p.m. On Saturday, UMW plays Frontier Conference rival MSU-Northern.

The Bulldogs are 2-5 on the season after going 1-1 at the Copper Cage Classic in Butte, Mont. UMW lost to Dickinson 74-69 and beat Walla Walla University 80-66.

Minot State is 2-3 on the season. The Beavers beat the University of Great Falls twice and lost twice to MSU-Northern. Minot opened the season with a 98-95 loss to Brandon University.

The Beavers are an NAIA Division II school and are members of the Dakota Athletic Conference. Last year, Minot downed the Bulldogs in Dillon 83-65.

Joe Gathings leads Minot in scoring with 18.2 ppg followed by Aaron Patterson with 17.2 ppg, C.J. DeWitty with 16 and Matt Witwer with 15.4 ppg. Minot averages 84.8 ppg while giving up 86.8.

Dickinson State is 3-1 on the season after going 1-1 at the Copper Cage Classic. After beating the Bulldogs on Saturday, the Blue Hawks lost to Montana Tech 61-59 Sunday afternoon.

This will be the second of three games the Bulldogs and Dickinson will play. Dickinson will be in Dillon on Dec. 15.

Four players are scoring in double figures for the Blue Hawks led by Sean Burnham with 12.3, Ervin Belton with 13.3 and Steve Mitchell with 11.7. Mitchell leads the team in rebounds with 7.3 followed by Belton with 5.5. Dickinson averages 67.3points a game while giving up 56.

MSU-Northern is unbeaten in six games. The Lights have beaten the University of Lethbridge 93-67, University of Regina 93-82, Multnomah 97-51, Walla Walla University 99-57 and Minot State twice, 87-75 and 85-73.

Last year, in Frontier Conference play, Northern beat the Bulldogs twice, 76-69 in Dillon and 76-70 in Havre.

Four players average in double figures for the Lights. Delvaughn Tinned leads the team with 25 ppg followed by Travis Noble with 15.7, Drew Pettersen with 13 and Derek Trembly with 10.5. Northern averages 92 ppg while giving up 67.5.

Layne Glaus leads the Bulldogs in scoring with 12 points ppg followed by Gus McDonald with 10.3 and Aaron Sims with 10.1. Sims leads the team in rebounding with 7.3 per game followed by Daniel Creech with 5.6. UMW averages 70 ppg while giving up 73.

The Bulldogs return to the Straugh Gymnasium to host Minot State on Dec. 1.

Bulldogs Win at Copper Cage Classic

The Bulldogs snapped a five game losing streak with an 80-66 win over Walla Walla University Sunday afternoon at the Copper Cage Classic in Butte, Mont.

UMW was playing without leading scorer Gus McDonald, who was injured Saturday night against Dickinson State.

The Bulldogs got off to a slow start, scoring only 10 points in the game's fiirst
10 minutes. After getting untracked, UMW quickly got back into the game and led at the half-time break 30-29.

The Bulldogs controlled the second half outscoring Walla Walla 50-37. The Wolves aggressive play sent the Bulldogs to the free throw line and UMW made 32 of 44.

Layne Glaus led the Bulldogs with 27 followed by Daniel Creech with 14, Chad Myers with 13 and Aaron Sims with 10.

The Bulldogs travel to North Dakota for three games beginning Wednesday.

Bulldogs Fall to Dickinson at Copper Cage Classic

The Bulldogs fell to Dickinson State 74-69 in the first game of the Copper Cage Classic in Butte, Mont. The loss dropped the Bulldogs to 1-5 overall.

The two teams battled evenly in the first half with the Bulldogs leading 31-30 at the break. UMW's 2-3 zone held the Dickinson offense in check in the first half.

The Bulldogs opened the second half ice-cold while Dickinson found the answer to the UMW zone and went on a 10-0 run in the half's first four minutes.

With four minutes to play, the Bulldogs cut Dickinson's lead to four, 70-66 on baskets from Gus McDonald, Aaron Sims and Layne Glaus.

The game was halted for 15 minutes after McDonald was involved in a three-player collision under the basket. McDonald was taken to the hospital and release later Saturday night.

When the action resumed, Dickinson sealed the win from the free throw line.

McDonald led the Bulldogs with 23 points followed by Garrett Fink with 12 and Layne Glaus with 10.

UMW faces Walla Walla Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.

Bulldogs Compete in Copper Cage Classic

The Montana Western Bulldog basketball team travels to Butte, Mont. to compete in the Copper Cage Classic hosted by Montana Tech Nov. 17-18.

The Bulldogs face the Dickinson State Blue Hawks on Saturday at 6 p.m. and the Walla Walla College Wolves on Sunday at 2 p.m. All games are at the Montana Tech HPER Center.

The Bulldogs are 1-4 on the season. UMW lost to Eastern Oregon and College of Idaho at the Quinn Classic over the weekend. And then lost to Utah State 58-77 in an exhibition game Monday night.

“Our preseason schedule has been very challenging,” said Bulldog coach Steve Keller. “The long road trips combined with playing some very good teams have proved to be a good learning experience. We are getting better and proved that Monday against Utah State. That was the best effort of the season.”

Dickinson State is 2-0 on the season with both wins over the University of Great Falls. The Blue Hawks won in Great Falls 57-43 and a week later, won in Dickinson 79-51.

Dickinson is a NAIA Division II school and is a member of the Dakota Athletic Conference.

This will be the first of two games the Bulldogs and Dickinson will play in less then a week. The two play again on Friday, Nov. 23 at the Milanovich Classic at Dickinson.

Last year the Bulldogs played Dickinson twice and won both times. UMW won 85-66 in Dickinson and 114-108 in Dillon.

Four players are scoring in double figures for the Blue Hawks led by Sean Burnham with 13, Steve Mitchell with 12, Ervin Belton with 11.5 and Jeremy Mallard with 10. Mitchell leads the team in rebounds with 7.5 followed by Fred Schehtinga with 6.5. Dickinson averages 68 points a game while giving up 47.

Walla Walla College is an associate member of the National Christian College Athletic Association and members of the Pacific Northwest College Conference.

Walla Walla is 3-3 on the season. The Wolves lost to Eastern Oregon, Cascade College and Montana State-Northern. Their victories were over Cascade College, Lewis-Clark State and Andrews University. Last year, the Bulldogs beat Walla Walla in Dillon 136-102.

Three players average in double figures for the Wolves led by Brett Weisner with 15.1 and then Ryan Wilson with 14.8 and Gerard Dauphin with 10.1. Walla Walla averages 69.4 ppg and gives up 85.5.

The Bulldogs feature a balanced scoring attack led by Aaron Sims with 10.4 ppg. Gus McDonald averages 9.8 ppg and Layne Glaus and Dovydas Retkus with 9.4 each. Sims leads the team in rebounding with 8.2 per game.

The Bulldogs average 68.2 ppg and give up 74.4. UMW has outrebounded their opponents 185 to 177.

Bulldogs Fall at Utah State

Utah State pulled away from a pesky Montana-Western squad with a 15-1 second-half run and coasted to a 77-58 win Monday night at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.

The game was part of the South Padre Invitational and counted as an exhibition for Montana-Western, an NAIA school from Dillon, Mont.

The Bulldogs closed to 23-20 with 5:46 left in the half on a layup by Creech, but the Aggies closed out the half on a 16-7 spurt sending USU into intermission with a 39-27 lead.

The Aggie lead grew to 52-37 before the Bulldogs clawed back to 59-49 at the 9:30 mark but a layup followed by a three-point play sparked the USU 15-1 streak to put the game out of reach.

The Bulldogs were 42.9 percent (21-of-49) field goal shooting, hitting 31.3 percent (5-of-16) behind the arc. UMW was also 64.7 percent (11-of-17) at the charity stripe.

Montana-Western was led by Gus McDonald with 19 points, while Daniel Creech added 10.

The Bulldogs return to action Nov. 17-18 to compete in the Copper Cage Classic in Butte, Mont.

Bulldogs Go 0-2 at Quinn Classic

Montana Western dropped two at the Qunin Classic in La Grande, Ore. The Bulldogs lost Friday to College of Idaho 57-66 and in a rematch with nationally ranked Eastern Oregon, lost 52-79 on Saturday.

The Bulldogs battled College of Idaho Friday night in the first game of the Quinn Classic.

And battle it was, the first half featured 15 lead changes and nine ties with College of Idaho leading at the half 33-28.

In the second half, the Bulldogs inched closer, but could not take control. Aaron Sims led the Bulldogs with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Also scoring in double figures for the Bulldogs were Chad Myers with 12 and Dovydas Tretkus with 10. The Bulldog bench outscored the Coyote bench 27-9. And the Bulldogs outrebounded C of I 41-19.

In their rematch against Eastern Oregon. The teams battled evenly over most of the first half. The Bulldogs led 23-20 midway through the first half.

The second half belonged to the Mountaineers as they outscored Montana Western 44-21.

Layne Glaus led the Bulldog scoring attack with 16 followed by Alex Head with 10. Sims grabbed a game high 12 rebounds.

Sims was also named to the All-Tournament team.

The Bulldogs travel to Logan, Utah for an exhibition game against Utah State on Monday, Nov. 12.

Bulldogs Compete at Quinn Classic

The University of Montana Bulldog basketball team travels to La Grande, Oregon to compete in the 9th Annual Quinn Classic Friday, Nov. 9 and Saturday, Nov. 10, hosted by Eastern Oregon University.

On Friday, the Bulldogs face the College of Idaho (formally Albertson College) Coyotes at 7 p.m. (MST) and Saturday, play the host Eastern Oregon Mountaineers at 9 p.m.(MST).

The Bulldogs are 1-2 on the season after losing to Eastern Oregon 93-79 and Azusa Pacific 90-77 last week. This past Sunday, Montana Western lost an exhibition game to Boise State 84-53.

The Bulldogs have lost nine straight to College of Idaho. Last season, UMW lost 66-73 in Dillon and 120-129 in overtime at the Quinn Classic.

College of Idaho is 0-2 on the season. At the Las Vegas Classic, the Coyotes lost to #2 Concordia-Irvine 96-63 and Vanguard 77-61. Craig McGee leads the Yotes in scoring with 15.5 points per game followed by Steffen Spinks with 12 and Kurt Nielson with 10.5. College of Idaho averages 62 points per game but gives up 86.5.

Eastern Oregon is unbeaten after three games. The Mountaineers own wins over Walla Wall University, Montana Tech and Montana Western. Eastern is ranked 17th in the nation in the NAIA, Division II power poll. The Mountaineers have four players averaging in double figures led by Mark Carollo with 17, Jeremy Templeton with 16.3, Kyle Janke with 13 and Neil Fryer with 12.7. Eastern Oregon averages 93 points a game while giving up 74.7.

Gus McDonald leads the Bulldogs in scoring with 12.3 points per game followed by Dovydas Retkus with 11.7 and Aaron Sims and Chad Myers with 10.7 each. Alex Head leads the team in rebounding with 6.3 per game. The Bulldogs average 77.3 points per game and give up 75.7.

On Monday, Nov. 12, the Bulldogs travel to Logan, Utah to play Utah State University in an exhibition game.

Bulldogs Drop Two on the Road

The Montana Western Bulldogs traveled to Billings for a non-conference men's basketball game on Saturday, Nov. 3 against Azusa Pacific and then to Boise, Idaho for an exhibition game against Boise State on Sunday, Nov. 4.

The Bulldogs played Azusa at the Fortin Center on the Rocky Mountain College campus.

Azusa, ranked 8th in the NAIA Division I men's preseason poll, outscored the Bulldogs 90-77.

Five players score in double figures for the Bulldogs led by Aaron Sims with 17 followed by Dovydas Retkus with 15, Layne Glaus with 12 and Gus McDonald and Daniel Creech with 11 each.

The Bulldogs were ice-cold against the NCAA, Division I Broncos of Boise State. The Bronco defense held Western to a chilly 28 percent from the field.

Layne Glaus led the Bulldogs with 17 points followed by Gus McDonald with 14.

The Bulldogs travel to La Grande, Oregon for the 9th Annual Quinn Classic. Western will play games against Eastern Oregon and the College of Idaho

Bulldogs Fall to Nationally Ranked Eastern Oregon

The University of Montana Western fell to the hot-shooting Eastern Oregon Mountaineers, 93-79 in a men’s non-conference basketball game.

Over the games first six minutes the teams played evenly. An Eastern Oregon basket with 13 minutes left in the first half broke a 10-10 tie and gave the Mountaineers a lead they would never lose.

Eastern hit 43 percent of their field goals and held the Bulldogs to only 24 percent. The Mountaineers led at he half 43-29.

In the second half, the Bulldogs found the range from the field but, could not overcome Eastern’s double digit lead.

Five players scored in double digits for the Bulldogs. Led by Gus McDonald with17. Dovydas Retkus followed with 14, Chad Myers added 13 and Layne Glaus and Aaron Sims had 11 each.

Jeremy Templeton led five Eastern Oregon players scoring in double figures with 19. Mark Carollo was next with 17, followed by Dan Blanchard with 13, Neal Fryer with 12, and Kyle Janke 10.

Montana Western plays Azusa Pacific Saturday, Nov. 3 at Billing, Mont. Eastern Oregon faces Montana Tech, also on Saturday.

Bulldog Basketball Faces Busy Weekend

After two weeks off, the University of Montana Western Bulldog basketball team gets back to business with three games in three days.

The Bulldogs host the Eastern Oregon University Mountaineers on Friday, Nov. 2, 2007. Tip off is 8 p.m. from the Straugh Gymnasium.

On Saturday, Nov. 3, the Bulldogs travel to Billings to face the Azusa Pacific Cougars. Tip off is 4 p.m. at the Fortin Center on the Rocky Mountain College campus.

On Sunday, Nov. 4, Montana Western travels to Boise, Idaho for an exhibition game against the Boise State Broncos. Tip off is 3:15 p.m. at the Taco Bell Arena on the Boise State campus.

Eastern Oregon is 1-0 on the season after a 108-78 victory over Walla Walla University on Oct. 25. Last year, Eastern downed the Bulldogs twice, winning in Dillon 73-66 and in La Grande 76-74. The Mountaineers finished with a 23-8 record last year and are ranked 18th in the NAIA Division II Preseason poll.

“They finished second in the very tough Cascade Conference,” said Bulldog coach Steve Keller. “Eastern returns three starters from last year. They have very good size, in fact they will be one of the bigger teams we play on our level.”

Azusa Pacific opens their season Friday, Nov. 2 when they play an exhibition game against UCLA. The Cougars were 29-7 last year, won the Golden State Athletic Conference tournament and advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NAIA National Tournament. Azusa is ranked 7th in the NAIA Preseason Division I Coach’s Poll.

“This will be a very good test for us,” said Keller. “Azusa is one of the powerhouse teams in the nation.”

Boise State is playing Evergreen College on Friday, Nov. 2 and the Bulldogs on Sunday to open their season with a pair of exhibition games. The Broncos are an NCAA, Division I team and members of the Western Athletic Conference. Boise State was 17-14 last year and 8-8 in the WAC.

“I don’t know much about Boise,” said Keller. “We will watch some film and go from there. We are just happy to be playing games. It has been two weeks since the Lethbridge game and we need to play.”

The Bulldogs will spend the rest of November on the road. They return to the Straugh Gymansium on Dec. 1 to host Minot State.
