Bulldogs Close Non-Conference Schedule at MSU-Billings

In their final non-conference game of the season, the University of Montana Western Bulldog basketball team travels to Billings, Mont. for a game against former Frontier Conference rival, the MSU-Billings Yellowjackets, Monday, Jan. 31, 2007.
Tip-off is 7 p,m. from the Alterowitz Gymnasium on the MSU-Billings campus.
The Bulldogs are 6-7 on the season. In their last game, Montana Western overcame an 18-point deficit to beat Dickinson State 72-61 on Dec. 15.
MSU-Billings is an NCAA Division II school and are members of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. When the Montana University system was restructured, Eastern Montana College became Montana State-Billings in July of 1994. The Yellowjackets were long-time members of the Frontier Conference.
MSU-Billings is 0-10 on the season after losing twice at home to Nebraska-Omaha last weekend. The Yellowjackets lost 88-77 and 98-85.
Rocky Mountain College, another former Frontier Conference foe, downed cross-town rival MSU-Billings, 88-79 on Dec. 17.
The Yellowjackets are led in scoring by Terry Aaron with 15.6 points per game (ppg) followed by Jeff Miner with 13.3 and John Brooks with 12.3. Cameron Khoury leads the team in rebounding with 5.6 per game followed by Aaron with 4.7 per game. MSU-Billings averages 67.3 points per game while giving up 93.6.
Four Bulldogs are scoring in double figures led by sophomore Layne Glaus with 13.2 ppg followed by senior Aaron Sims and sophomore Gus McDonald with 12.1 each and junior Chad Myters with 11.7. Sims leads UMW in rebounding with 8.6 per game followed by Daniel Creech with 6.5.
Montana Western averages 72.4 ppg while giving up 71.8
The Bulldogs open the 2008 Frontier Conference season when they host Montana Tech on Saturday, Jan. 5.

Myers Named Frontier Player of the Week

Chad Myers a 6’2” junior guard from Troy, Mont. was named the Frontier Conference men's player of the week.
Montana Western went 1-1 on the weekend, beating Dickinson State 72-61 at home and losing 84-94 in an exhibition game at Weber State.
Myers averaged 23.5 points per game. He was 15 of 21 from the field including 12 of 16 three-point field goals and 5 of 7 from the free throw line.
The Bulldogs return to action on Dec. 29 when they play at Montana State-Billings.

Bulldogs Down Dickinson State

The Montana Western Bulldogs downed the Dickinson State Blue Hawks 72-61 in a men’s non-conference college basketball game from Dillon’s Straugh Gymnasium.
The Bulldogs are now 6-7 on the season while Dickinson fall to 6-6 on the season. It is the first win for UMW over the Blue Hawks in three games this season.
Chad Myers open the game with a three-point basket that started an 8-0 run for the Bulldogs. Dickinson scored at the 18:14 mark of the first half. The Blue Hawks then went on a 15-8 run and led 17-16 with 9:34 remaining in the first half.
A basket by Daniel Creech gave UMW a 24-22 lead with 6:48 remaining in the half. The Bulldogs stretched the lead to 35-28 with a minute left. Two free throws by Dickinson’s Ryan Bogner and and a three-point field goal by Brian Lebsock cut the Bulldog lead to 35-33 at the half.
The Blue Hawks opened the second half with a 7-2 run and led 40-37 at the 17:39 mark. A field goal by Chad Myers and two free throws by Gus McDonald gave the Bulldogs a 41-40 lead. UMW built their lead to nine, 49-40 with 12:40 left in the game.
Dickinson came battling back and on the strength of 9-0 run tied the game at 49 with nine minutes remaining.
At the seven-minute mark, a free throw by Ervin Belton gave the Blue Hawks their first lead since the first half, 55-54 with 6:49 remaining.
Gus McDonald’s three-point basket at the five-minute mark proved to be the winning basket as it gave the Bulldogs a 57-55 lead, and a lead they would not lose.
Montana Western used the free throw line to seal the victory.
Chad Myers led the Bulldogs with 22 points followed by Aaron Sims and Daniel Creech with 13 each. Sims led the team in rebounding with 13.

Bulldogs Fall at Weber State

Kellen McCoy scored a career-high 19 points as Weber State ended a four-game losing streak with a 94-84 win over Montana-Western on Friday night.
McCoy, who was one of five Wildcats to score in double digits, shot 7 of 9 from the field including a perfect 3 for 3 from 3-point range.
The Wildcats (3-6) ended the first half on a 13-4 run, capped off by a tip-in from Trevor Morris at the buzzer, to lead 48-34 at the break.
Montana-Western cut Weber State’s lead to 90-84 with 1:11 remaining on a basket from Layne Glaus, but McCoy hit a pair of free throws moments later after the Bulldogs were called for an intentional foul.
Chad Meyers scored 25 points for the NAIA Bulldogs (5-7), who used the game as an exhibition so the loss did not count in their record.
Arturas Valeika finished with 15 points for the Wildcats while Juan Pablo Silveira had 11 and Steve Panos and Dezmon Harris each added 10.
Gus McDonald scored 18 for the Bulldogs and Glaus had 17.

Bulldogs Play Two

The Bulldog basketball team returns to action with two games.
The Bulldogs travel to Ogden, Utah for an exhibition game against the Weber State University Wildcats, Friday, Dec. 14 and return to Dillon to host the Dickinson State Blue Hawks on Saturday, Dec. 15.
Tip-off Friday in Ogden is 8:05 p.m. and tip-off in Dillon on Saturday is 8 p.m. in the Straugh Gymnasium.
The Bulldogs are 5-7 on the season after beating College of Idaho 90-89 in overtime last Friday. UMW also lost 70-80 to Northwest Nazarene, but the game was an exhibition and doesn’t count in the Bulldogs overall record.
Weber State is an NCAA, Division I school and a member of the Big Sky Conference. The Wildcats are 2-6 overall after losing 65-67 at the University of San Francisco last Saturday.
Friday*s game is the 9th meeting between the two teams. The Wildcats
are a perfect 8-0 vs. the Bulldogs. WSU is 5-0 at home vs.
Montana Western, 2-0 vs. the Bulldogs in Dillon and 1-0 in Anaconda,
Mont. where they met in a tournament in 1963-64.
Arturas Valeika is the only Wildcat averaging in double figures with 12 points per game. Juan Pablo Silvera is next with 8.4 points per game. Valeika also leads Weber in rebounding with 9.3 per game. Weber averages 62.4 points per game while giving up 69.5.
UMW has faced Dickenson State twice this season. The Bulldogs lost 69-74 to the Blue Hawks at the Copper Cage Classin Butte, Mont. and 64-74 at Dickinson’s Thanksgiving tournament.
The Blue Hawks are 6-5 on the season after losing 64-77 to Minot State on Dec. 6.
Ervin Belton leads Dickinson in scoring and rebounding with 12.4 ppg and 5.4 rpg. Steve Mitchell is only other Blue Hawk averaging in double figures with 10.5 ppg. Dickinson averages 66.7 ppg game while giving up 66.7.
Layne Glause leads the Bulldog in scoring with 13.5 points per game followed by Aaron Sims and Gus McDonald with 12 ppg each. Sims leads the team in rebounds with eight per game. The Bulldogs average 72.4 ppg and give up 72.8.

Northwest Nazarene Tops the Bulldogs

Northwest Nazarene took the inaugural Wendy’s Classic college men’s basketball tournament championship with an 80-70 victory over Montana Western Saturday night at the J.A. Albertson Activities Center.
The title tilt saw Montana Western cut the margin to 51-47 with 10 minutes remaining before NNU went on a 10-0 run, keyed by seven points from Josh Rymer, to take control of the game, which counts as an exhibition for UMW.
Rymer had a game-high 21 points, including 8-of-8 shooting from the foul line. Kendall Gielow added 18 points and nine rebounds, with Scott Helpenstell recording 12 points and nine rebounds, including a pair of alley-oop dunks.
Layne Glaus had 15 points to lead Montana Western. Aaron Sims scored 13.
A 20-6 run to open the second half lifted The College of Idaho men's basketball team to a 79-67 victory over Westmont College in the final game of the Classic.
The Wendy's Classic was able to make a donation of $10,432 to Boise's Wednesday's Child adoption program in a pre-game ceremony. In conjunction with the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption and Wendy's Wonderful Kids-Idaho, both The C of I and NNU donated the gate receipts from Friday's game — which was $5,126, a total that was matched by a Family Foundation
matching gift company.

Bulldogs Edged College of Idaho

Aaron Sims tipped home a missed 3-pointer with one-tenth of a second remaining in overtime, lifting the University of Montana Western to a 90-89 victory over The College of Idaho tonight in Game 2 of the Wendy's Classic college men’s basketball tournament in the J.A. Albertson Activities Center.
It was the Bulldogs second straight, come-from-behind, overtime win.
After Josh Owen split a pair of free throws with seven seconds remaining to give the Coyotes (3-8) an 89-88 lead, the Bulldogs rushed the ball up floor, with Gus McDonald launching a three. The ball drew iron, but caromed to Sims, whose tap fell over the front iron and in, ending a 10-game losing streak to The C of I.
Leading 40-28 late in the first half, the Bulldogs (5-7) watched as the Yotes went on a 18-0 run spanning the two halves, and built a 67-55 lead with six minutes remaining.

Bulldogs Compete at Wendy's Classic

The Montana Western Bulldog basketball team travels to Caldwell Idaho to face two Idaho teams in the Wendy’s Classic (all proceeds to benefit the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption).
On Friday, Dec. 7 the Bulldogs play The College of Idaho Coyotes in a men’s non-conference basketball game. Tip-off is at 8 p.m. from the College of Idaho’s J.A. Albertson Activities Center.
On Saturday, Dec. 8 the Bulldogs play an exhibition game against the Northwest Nazarene University Crusaders. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. in Caldwell.
The College of Idaho is a Division II NAIA school and a member of the Cascade Conference. The Coyotes are 4-7 for the season.
The Bulldogs lost to the Coyotes 57-66 last month at the Eastern Oregon tournament.
Northwest Nazarene is a NCAA Division II team and a member of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. The Crusaders are 5-0 for the season.
In the Bulldogs last meeting with the Crusaders, NNU won 71-56 Nov. 24, 2000.
The Bulldogs are 4-7 after edging Minot State Beavers 84-81 in overtime last weekend. Montana Western fell behind the Beavers as many as 17 points in the first half. A more consistent Bulldog offense in the second half lead to a 72-72 score at the end of regulation. Montana Western shot 52% from the field, lead by Layne Glaus with 26 points.
“That was a great character-building game for us,” said Bulldog coach Steve Keller. “We didn’t play well in the first half, but the guys didn’t give up. Them came out in the second half focused and played a great half of basketball. It showed them what they are capable of.”
The tournament is the Bulldogs last game until Dec. 31 when they will travel to Billings to play and exhibition game with Montana State University.

Bulldogs Edge Minot In Overtime

The Montana Western Bulldogs edged the Minot State Beavers 84-81 in overtime in a men’s non-conference college basketball game from Dillon’s Straugh Gymnasium.
The Bulldogs are now 4-7 overall while Minot falls to 3-6 on the season.
UMW’s Gus McDonald hit an off-balanced three-point basket with seven seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime.
The Bulldogs jumped out early and led 7-2 in the game’s first three minutes. Minot then went on a 16-2 charge for the lead and control of the game. The Beavers led by as many as 17 in the first half and went into halftime with a 42-29 lead.
The Bulldogs used the first ten minutes of the second half to pick away at the Minot lead. A field goal by Layne Glaus cut the Beavers lead to six, 45-51 with 10:17 left to play.
Over the next four minutes, the Bulldogs outscored Minot 12-6 and tied the game at 57 with six minutes left to play. The Beavers went on a 9-2 run and led by seven, 66-59 with 2:25 remaining.
The teams traded baskets and free throws over the last minute and a half. Minot led 72-69 when McDonald hit his game tying three-pointer.
In overtime, Chad Myers put the Bulldogs on top with a three pointer. UMW maintained a slim lead until a Matt Witwer three-pointer gave the Beavers a 79-78 lead with two minutes remaining. UMW took the lead back with a Gus McDonald two-pointer.
The Bulldogs sealed the victory with two free throws from Glaus.
Witwer led Minot with 28 points followed by Aaron Patterson with 15 and CJ DeWitty and Andy Leraas with 10 each.
Glaus led the Bulldogs with 26 followed by Myers and McDonald with 17 each.
