Two Bulldogs Earn All-Conference Honors

Two Montana Western basketball players were named to the 2005-2006 Frontier Conference Men’s Basketball All-Conference team.
The Bulldogs finished the season with a conference record of 7-7 and an overall mark of 13-18. UMW lost 76-74 to MSU-Northern in the first round of the “Swede” Kenison Frontier Conference Basketball Tournament.
Wes Morales, a 6-4 junior forward from Worden, Montana, was named to the first team. In all games, Morales averaged 14 points (12 in the conference) and 6.30 rebounds (8th in the conference). In conference only games he averaged 17.5 points per game and 6.5 rebounds per game.
Charlie Cox, a 6-0 freshman guard from Missoula, earned second team honors. Cox averaged 13.9 points per game, 5.71 assists (third in the conference, 13th in the nation) and 1.3 steals per game.

Bulldogs End Season With Tournament Loss to MSU-Northern

It was truly a Hollywood finish, but not for the Bulldogs. They fell 74-76 in a first round game of the “Swede” Kenison Frontier Conference basketball tournament.
The Bulldogs got off to a good start and controlled the first eleven minutes of the first half. Their biggest lead was six, at the 11:40 mark when they led 14-8. Over the next couple of minutes, Northern slowly chipped away at the lead and grabbed a 21-20 lead with 6:21 remaining in the half. The Bulldogs took the lead back with 3:38 remaining. The teams traded possessions and leads. Northern led 35-31 at the break.
After trading baskets, but not leads, Northern began to pull away on the strength of the cold shooting Bulldogs. The Lights built their lead to 12 and stayed with that margin until the 5:24 mark of the game when the Bulldogs began their comeback.
The Bulldogs began to chip away at the Northern lead. In the games final minutes, Western made their free throws while Northern missed theirs. The Lights missed five out six free throws in the games final minute. With the score tied at 74-74 and .8 seconds on the clock, the Lights’ Marcus Wilson hit a jumper as time ran out for the win.
Wes Morales led the Bulldogs with 19 points followed by Charlie Cox with 16 and Jeff Graham with 11.
The Bulldogs end their season with an overall record of 13-18.

Bulldogs vs MSU-Northern in First Round of Conference Tourney

The Montana Western Bulldog basketball team opens Frontier Conference Tournament play against the MSU-Northern Lights, Thursday, March 2. Tip-off is 8:00 p.m. from the Maroon Activity Center.
Montana Western is the tournament’s #5 seed. The Bulldogs finished the regular season with a 7-7 conference record and a 13-17 overall mark. Northern, seeded 4th, finished the regular season with a 7-7 league mark and an overall record of 18-12.
The two teams split their season series with each winning on the road. The Bulldogs won in Havre 70-54 wile Northern won in Dillon 78-66.
Montana Western boasts three scorers in the conference top 15. Tyler Palmer averages 15.4 points per game, Wes Morales averages 14 and Charlie Cox averages 13.9 points.
Jordan Mathews leads the Lights with 16.3 points per game.
