Bar J Wranglers to Perform at Western

The University of Montana-Western Rodeo Club and the Dillon Junior Fiddlers are teaming up to bring the Bar J Wranglers to Dillon on Saturday, February 19. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. in the Beier Auditorium.
Some folks call it a western music show; some call it a stand-up comedy show with masterful cowboy music; others call it the best musical experience in the west. Call it what you want to -- the fact remains; The Bar J Wranglers from Jackson Hole, Wyoming, deliver some of the purest harmony, best musicianship and funniest ranch humor ever seen on stage. As soon as the Bar J Wranglers take to the stage, listeners leave behind their busy life and settle into a time long ago -- a time of the singing cowboy.
The Bar J Wranglers have performed in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, seven nights per week during the summer months, entertaining 700 nightly, at the acclaimed Bar J Chuckwagon. During their off season, the Wranglers perform all over the world, bringing their style of western music, stellar harmony, outrageous comedy and remarkable musicianship to people of all ages and backgrounds. They have entertained for local, regional and national conventions throughout the west and have been hired for hundreds of city concerts, holiday parties and other smaller venues. They have been featured on TNN with Roy Rogers, Dale Evans and Randy Travis, as well as live performances on the Discovery Channel and the Travel Network.
Tickets are $15 at the door, $10 in advance. Advance tickets are available at Bert's C.D.'s in downtown Dillon, the UM-Western Foundation Office, the Beaverhead Chamber of Commerce Office or from any Dillon Jr. Fiddler or Western Rodeo club member.

UM-Western Student Featured in "On the Rocks" Presentation

“On the Rocks” is a guest speaker series sponsored by the Department of Environmental Sciences and Program in Mathematics at The University of Montana-Western.
The next program is Monday, February 7 at 4:15 P.M. in Room 311 of Block Hall. UM-Western student Sage Hawley is the featured speaker.
Hawley will speak on his summer internship with the Bureau of Land Management. His presentation is titled “Rangeland Plant Inventory of the BLM Dillon Field Office.”
“On the Rocks” provides a forum for the presentation of topics of interest to the scientific community. Neither Western nor the Department of Environmental Sciences is advocating any particular view or any policy or position.

Alumni Appreciation Night and Window on Western Set for February 11

The University of Montana-Western Alumni Association and Library and Technology Center is sponsoring “Window on Western”, a special night honoring alumni and friends and putting the spotlight on the entire campus community.
“Window on Western” is set for Friday, February 11, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Keltz Arena.
This will be a special night for Western alumni to reconnect with Western and former classmates.
The night's special activities include free food, door prizes, an online registration booth, games for kids, campus display booths.
In addition to the events in the Keltz Arena, there is also Frontier Conference basketball against Montana Tech in the Straugh Gymnasium. The Lady Bulldogs tipoff at 6:00 p.m. followed by the Bulldogs at 8:00 p.m.

Polynesian Club a Hit at Montana Legislature

The University of Montana-Western's Polynesian Club performed in Helena Friday, January 21 and Saturday, January 22.
The group's performance of traditional Polynesian dance and music was presented Friday in both the Montana Senate and in the House of Representatives. The group received standing ovations at both legislative performances. On Saturday they had a longer performance for a National Guard group at Fort Harrison, which was again warmly received. Traditional instruments, colorful costumes, and Maori warrior make-up were featured in both performances.
The Polynesian Club is planning performances on the Western campus so the campus and Dillon community have the opportunity to enjoy these talented performers and experience the Polynesian culture.
Club members include Kamakani Rowland (President), Enoch McKeague (Vice President), Sam Sardinha, Nelle Rowland, Mala Afoa, Tiffany Allen, Abraham Apilado, Ikaika Cabral, Isaiah Dela Pena, Dara McKeown, Lawai'a Naihe, Keali'I Perbera, and Kelly Wasser.as well as others who were unable to make the latest performances.
The purpose of the club is to promote and encourage diversity in the local community. The club is open to any person from or interested in the culture of Polynesia. They can be contacted at umwpolynesianclub@hotmail.com.

All readings will take place Thursday nights at 7:30 p.m. at The Cup, located on the lower level of the Swysgood Technology Center. The Series is titled “Dances With Words.”

Western Professor Selected to National Post

Julie Bullard, professor and Director of Early Childhood at the University of Montana-Western was recently selected to be on the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) Board of Examiners.
NCATE is the profession's mechanism to help ensure high quality teacher preparation through performance assessment It is comprised of a coalition of 33 national organizations.
Dr. Bullard is one of five early childhood professionals on the Board of Examiners representing the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). NAEYC is the largest early childhood association in the world with over 100,000 members.
Board of Examiner members are nominated on the basis of expertise in professional education, teaching, and research. Members must also demonstrate skill in evaluation techniques such as the interpretation of data, the use of rating scales and questionnaires, interviewing and observation techniques, reading and analyzing narrative information, writing observations and evaluations, and making qualified judgments about professional education units.
After being chosen by a member organization and reviewed by the NCATE Board, potential Board of Examiners members receive extensive training where their skills are evaluated by several different observers and participants.
Those selected to the Board make a three year commitment to make on-site visits to higher education programs around the country to conduct an assessment of their educational program.

Chancellor Storey Sets Open Office Hours

During the 2005 Spring Semester, University of Montana-Western Chancellor Richard Storey will continue to offer open office hours on as many alternate Tuesdays as his schedule permits.
Dr. Storey will be available from 11:00 a.m. until 12:15 p.m. in the Student Union on campus to talk with faculty, staff, students, and community members about issues on their minds and answer question about Western. Please feel
free to stop by and say hello, or share thoughts with him.
The schedule is open to change due to the Chancellor's schedule at the 2005 Montana Legislature.
Currently, the scheduled winter and spring 2005 dates for the Chancellor's Open office is:
