UM-Western Students in China
Monday, January 30 2006
A group of University of Montana Western students are currently in China as part of their Honors 101 class, “Family Socialization Across Cultures.” The students are accompanied on the trip by Western education professor Dr. Nili Luo.
The course focuses on the concepts of the family, of love, of age, gender, of marriage, childhood, relatives, and adoption in the United States and in China.
There was classroom work at Western before the students departed for China. In China, the students will interact with Chinese families.
Their first stop was Shanghai where they spent three days. They are now in Chaohu in the Anhui Providence, where they will spend the remainder of their trip.
The group’s itinerary includes Chaohu College, tour an elementary visit an orphanage, and congregate with Chinese students at a local Christian church/Buddhist temple. The group returns on Febuary 8.
In June 2005, representatives from Chaohu College and UM-Western signed a friendship and cooperation agreement. Both schools will develop detailed faculty and student exchange agreements that will be beneficial to both institutions
Upon returning to Western, the students will prepare two portfolios. One is a personal family portfolio using the concepts learned in the class. The second is a portfolio based on their experiences with the Chinese families and students they met. The group will give several presentations around Dillon.

Art Gallery Features Butte Artist
Wednesday, January 18 2006
The University of Montana Western Art Gallery/Museum begins 2006 with an exhibit of Raku pottery by Butte native and artist Kristi Brothers.
Brothers' pottery will be on display until March 10. This Raku pieces are both wheel-thrown and hand-built.
Brothers specializes in using copper as a primary ingredient of the glazes, giving many of the pieces a surface reminiscent of metal. Copper is capable of producing rich "rainbow" effects in an oxygen-deprived atmosphere and a variety of greens and blues in an oxygen-producing atmosphere. The glazes in this exhibit are both matt and gloss.
Raku is a special ceramic firing technique, first used by the Japanese back in the early 1500's. At first it was used exclusively to make cups for the tea ceremony that is still practiced throughout Japan. Raku is a low-fire technique, often using lead-based glazes. Unlike traditional pottery, the firing process is relatively quick and the pot is allowed to cool quickly. The firing process is very unpredictable, thus the glaze effects on each vessel are very unique.
The UMW campus and Dillon community are invited to this free event and refreshments will be served. The reception is scheduled to coincide with the Southwest Montana Arts Council Showcase Series performance that evening by Rumba Calzada (7:30 p.m. in the Beier Auditorium).
The Art Gallery/Museum can be found at the south end of the first floor of Main Hall on the Western campus. Scheduled gallery hours are Mondays through Fridays from 11 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. To arrange for special times or visits call the director at 683-7232.
