Drama Department Presents "Crimes of the Heart"

The University of Montana Western Drama-Fine Arts Department presents “Crimes of the Heart”, Thursday, Dec. 1, Friday, Dec. 2, Saturday, Dec. 3 and Sunday, Dec. 4. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. in the UM-Western Small Auditorium. Admission is $5.00.
“Crimes of the Heart” is a family tragedy set in a small town in Mississippi in 1978. Three sisters with quite different personalities and lives reunite when the youngest of them, Babe, has just shot her husband. The oldest sister, Lenny, takes care of their grandfather and is turning into an old maid, while Meg, who tries to make it in Hollywood as a singer/actress, has had a wild life filled with many men. Their reunion causes much joy, but also many tensions.
“Crimes of the Heart”, is an American classic. The play won a Pulitzer Prize and the original production enjoyed a successful run on Broadway.
Thirty UM-Western students, from actors to stage crew, are involved in the production. Larry Brazill directs the play, assisted by Estelle Hill.

Honors Group Bound For China

The University of Montana Western Honors Class 202 is going to China in January. The class is holding a fund-raising dinner on Sunday, December 4.
The authentic Chinese dinner and silent auction will be held from 6:00-9:00 p.m. at the Dillon Elks Lodge.
The auction will feature items from Patagonia, the Old Hotel in Twin Bridges, Bad Ass Coffee, the Dillon Quilt Guild, as well as from other fine Beaverhead County businesses.
Advance tickets are $20 a person or $30 a couple. Tickets at the door are $25 a person and $35 a couple.

Poetry Reading

Nineteen students in the 2005 University of Montana Western Poetry workshop will read their original poems at a special reading, Wednesday, November 16 at 7:00 pm. The readings will be held at Sweetwater Coffee in downtown Dillon.
You are invited to join the students for an evening of peculiar rhythms, full-moon rhymes and utterly, sassy poetry.

Dances With Words

The University of Montana Western English department is sponsoring a series of readings of area writers and poets during the 2005 Fall Semester titled “Dances With Words.”
The next reading features Montana poet Bill Wilborn, Thursday, Nov. 10, at 7:30 p.m. in The Cup, located on the lower level of the Swysgood Technology Center.
Wilborn was born and raised in Missoula. After graduating from Sentinel High School, he briefly attended the University of Montana. Wilborn dropped out of school and spent time traveling around Europe. Upon his return, he attended Stanford University, where he graduated with honors.
Wilborn then entered the doctoral program at Cornell University on a Wilson Fellowship. He taught English at the University of Nevada-Reno from 1971 to 1988. Wilburn spent a semester in Finland on a Fulbright Fellow.
Wilburn has published a chapbook of epigrammatic verse and a volume of poems, Rooms. His poetry has appeared in many literary journals, including Poetry.
The UM-Western English Department and Student Senate sponsor Dances With Words. The reading is open to the public and free of charge.

Ag Conference and Expo Set for Jan. 12-13

The University of Montana Western’s 5th Annual Ag Conference and Expo is scheduled for Jan. 12 and 13, 2006 in Dillon, Montana on Western campus.
The conference features seven general sessions, four breakout sessions with at least four workshops per session, and a vendor expo that is open to the public.
Over 20 speakers will cover topics including history, technology, agricultural & community sustainability, increasing profits, and animal & range health. Featured workshop: Ag Safety Workshop qualifies for Montana Ag Safety Program Workers’ Compensation discounts.
Keynote speakers include Kit Pharo (Pharo Cattle Company - Cheyenne Wells, Colorado), Charley Orchard (Land EKG, Inc. – Bozeman), and Brian Kahn (NPR’s Home Ground), to name a few. Conference meals feature Montana food products.

Booster Club Dinner Auction Set for Saturday, November 5

The 14th Annual University of Montana-Western Bulldog Booster Club Dinner-Auction is Saturday, November 5 in the Straugh Gymnasium. The evening begins with a social hour at 6:00 p.m. followed at 7:00 p.m. with the Dinner and Auction.
Auction items include a selection of Grizzly memorabilia including a helmet signed by Dave Dickinson, Don Read and Bobby Hauck; a Grizzly jersey, a Grizzly stocking cap and a Grizzly cap. Other items include a one week stay at a condo in Kauai, Hawaii, a golf package from Pryor Creek Golf Course in Huntley, Berringer wine, a gift certificate from Beaverhead IGA, a Stevens model 200 Big Game Rifle from Shedhorn Sports of Ennis and many more items.
Tickets, which admit two, are $100 in advance and $125 at the door. Ticket holders will be eligible for door prizes and cash prizes of $1000 for first place, $500 for second and $300 for third. The evening benefits the University of Montana-Western Athletic program.
