Russell Chatham Featured At Montana Western Gallery
Saturday, November 11 2006
The University of Montana Western art gallery is featuring the work of Russell Chatham, one of Montana's best known and popular contemporary artists, through Dec. 15, 2006 in the Corr Galleries.

A public reception for Chatham will be held Wed., Nov. 15 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Montana Western Art Gallery. This is a wonderful chance for admirers of Chatham's work to get a chance to meet the artist.

The reception is in connection with the Southwest Montana Arts Council performance of "Faustwork: the Mask Messenger" at 7:30 p.m. in the Beier Auditorium. Russell Chatham's exhibit is sponsored by the Montana Art Gallery Directors Association with funding by the National Endowment of the Arts, the Montana Coal Tax Fund, and the Montana Arts Council.

The exhibit features 15 lithographs spanning 15 years of the artist's prints. Working from his studio in Livingston since 1972, Chatham has become a Montana fixture as a painter, printmaker, and author. He has had over 400 one-man shows all over the world. He is the founder and publisher of Clark City Press, which, since 1989, has published thirty-two books of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, art, photography, and children's classics.

In 1981 Chatham began making lithographic prints. Lithograph prints look like colored pencil drawings. The artist draws on separate plates for each color in the print. Some prints contain as many as 50 different colors. A lithograph with forty-one colors could easily require 200 hours of work. When all the colors are printed on top of each other the final print appears as a full color landscape exhibiting Chatham's signature soft edged style.
Currently all of Chatham's lithographs are printed at Sunlight Graphics in Livingston and are overseen by master printer Geoffrey Harvey, a graduate of the Tamarind Institute in New Mexico who has years of professional experience.

"This is a very impressive show," says Gallery Director Randy Horst, "Some of the prints are 34 x 45 inches. It's like having a window-sized view of a peaceful Montana sunrise. Chatham's prints are so full of atmosphere. They make you stop and notice the serene qualities of the land."

The Art Gallery/Museum can be found at the south end of the first floor of Main Hall on the Montana Western campus. Gallery times are Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. To arrange for special times or visits call the director at 683-7232. The Gallery/Museum also houses a permanent collection of art, including works by C.M. Russell, Edgar Paxson, and Monte Dolack, and the Seidensticker Wildlife Collection of taxidermy from around the world. The annual Art Faculty Exhibit will be the next art show and will open Dec. 21.
