Final Fall Semester "On the Rocks" Set for Monday, Dec. 19

"On the Rocks" is a guest speaker series sponsored by the Department of Environmental Sciences and Program in Mathematics at The University of Montana-Western.
The final program of the 2005 Fall Semester is Monday, Dec. 19 at 4:15 P.M. in Room 311 of Block Hall featuring UM-Western graduate Kyle Lund.
The title of his presentation is "Nanobiotechnology: “DNA Self-Assembly," Lund is now in a Biochemistry Ph.D. program at Arizona State
University. His talk will focus on his research as a graduate student.
"On the Rocks" provides a forum for the presentation of topics of interest to the scientific community. Neither Western nor the Department of Environmental Sciences is advocating any particular view or any policy or position.

Learning Center Open on Western Campus

The University of Montana-Western’s new Learning Assistance Center for Excellence (L.A.C.E.) is holding an Open House, Wednesday, December 7 from 11:00 a.m. to Noon.
L.A.C.E. is located in the lower level of the Lucy Carson Library on the Westen campus.
The mission of L.A.C.E. is to help ensure better student retention and success. The purpose of L.A.C.E. is to enhance both individual learning and in-class performance and is committed to helping students achieve success in their scholastic endeavors.
The LACE is a collaborative project with funding, administration, and staffing support from the TRiO Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), administrative support from the Office of Student Success, funding and computer support from the Office of Fiscal Affairs and Student Senate, and provision of space from the library
Tutors are recommended through the different departments and are required to go through training in the best practices of being a tutor. There are currently 10 paid tutors and 4 volunteers. The tutors span the academic disciplines for 100 and 200 level courses.
The center is directed by Ilene Cohen and managed by Christy Keyes and is open Monday-Thursday 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and 3 p.m.-5 p.m., Friday 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Tuesday and Sunday evenings 7 p.m.-9 p.m.
