Alpha Chi Chapter at Montana Western

The University of Montana Western chapter of Alpha Chi National College Honor Scholarship Society, was inaugurated in ceremonies conducted Saturday, Dec. 1, 2007.

In addition to the inauguration ceremonies, the chapter installed officers and inducted 14 new members.

Dr. Michael Flachmann, the National Council Representative, conducted the ceremony.

Alpha Chi is an academic honors society that promotes excellence in scholarship among college and university students of good character. Alpha Chi inducts no more than the top ten percent of students in the junior and senior classes.

The newly inducted members to the Montana Gamma Chapter are:

DAR Establishes Scholarship

The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Silver Bow Chapter recently established a Golden Gift Scholarship endowment of $50,000 to assist in-state UMW students.

 

The endowment is inspired by an anonymous donor who in 1921 received a scholarship to attend the then Montana Normal College.

"Dances With Words" Features Montana Author-Musician

Montana writer Aaron Parrett will give the final reading of the fall semester’s “Dancing With Words” Thursday, Dec. 6, 2007 at 7:30 p.m. in The Cup, located on the lower level of the Swysgood Technology Center.

“Dances With Words”, is a series of readings of regional writers and poets each semester, sponsored by The University of Montana Western English department.

Parrett began writing fiction and criticism in 2001. His short stories have appeared in several publications. His book “The Translunar Narrative in the Western Tradition,” was published in 2004.

He has published academic works in history, literature, and philosophy. Parrett currently has a novel under consideration and is working on an academic study of theology and gambling.

He is also an accomplished guitarist and fiddler with several albums of originals bluegrass and country music to his credit.

Parrett was born in Butte, Mont and grew up in Helena, Mont. He received a B.A. in philosophy from the University of Montana, a M.A. and Ph.D. in comparative literature from the University of Georgia.

Parrett is an associate professor of English at the University of Great Falls.

Holiday Concert and Recital at Montana Western

The University of Montana Western campus will be filled with the sound of music with the annual Fall/Christmas Concert and the Music Club Recital.

The Montana Western Music Club recital is Monday, Dec. 10, 2007 in Main Hall 415 beginning at 6 p.m.

The recital will feature performances from private students, the percussion methods class and other students from the Montana Western music program. The program includes selections from vocalists, instrumentalists and small ensembles.

The Music Department’s Fall and Christmas Concert is Thursday, Dec. 13, 2007 at 7:30 p.m. in the Beier Auditorium.

The concert program will feature performances by the Montana Western/Dillon Community Concert Band, the Community Choir and the Jazz Band.

The Concert Band will perform a selection of marches by John Phillip Sousa and Karl King and will play Christmas carols for an audience sing-along. Brent McCabe directs the Concert Band.

The choir program includes light concert pieces, folk songs and Christmas songs. The women’s ensemble will perform a farewell to autumn. Jeri Bonnin directs the choir.

The jazz band will perform several jazz standards in addition to several holiday selections. Laurie Henneman directs the jazz band.

Final "On the Rocks" Presentation of Fall Semester

The forestry/wilderness proposal for the Beaverhead/Deer Lodge Forest is the subject of the next “On the Rocks” presentation Monday, Dec. 10, 2007.

"On the Rocks" is a guest speaker series sponsored by the Department of Environmental Sciences and Program in Mathematics at the University of Montana Western.

The presentation is titled “Beaverhead-Deer Lodge Partnership: Montanans Working Together” and begins at 4:15 p.m. in Block Hall 311.

The featured speakers are Sherm Anderson, owner of Sun Mountain Lumber and Sun Mountain Logging, LLC in Deer Lodge, Mont. and Tim Baker, executive director of the Montana Wilderness Association (MWA).

They will lead a informational discussion concerning the forestry/wilderness proposal for the Beaverhead/Deer Lodge Forest.

Anderson has served as President of The American Loggers Council and has earned numerous awards and recognitions from various business and industry associations. In 2003, he served a term in the Montana State Legislature as a Senator representing the areas of Deer Lodge and Helena

Baker develops strategies to accomplish MWA’s mission and goals. He develops and maintains positive working relationships with Montana’s political, conservation, business and cultural leaders.

"On the Rocks" provides a forum for the presentation of topics of interest to the scientific community. Neither Montana Western nor the Department of Environmental Sciences is advocating any particular view or any policy or position.
