"On the Rocks" is a guest speaker series sponsored by the Department of Environmental Sciences and Program in Mathematics at Montana Western.

The third program of the 2006 Spring Semester is Monday, March 6 at 4:15 P.M. in Room 311 of Block Hall featuring Susan Briggs, Montana Western Vice-Chancellor of Fiscal Affairs.

The title of her presentation is "The University of Montana Western's Wood-fired Boiler Project."

"On the Rocks" provides a forum for the presentation of topics of interest to the scientific community. Neither Western nor the Department of Environmental Sciences is advocating any particular view or any policy or position.

Reception for Board of Regents at Beaverhead Chamber of Commerce

The University of Montana Western is the hosting the March meeting of the Montana University System’s Board of Regents, March 1 – 3.

On Thursday, March 2, Montana Western and the Beaverhead Chamber of Commerce will host a reception for the Regents and leadership from the other institutions within the Montana University System. The reception is 5:30 to 7:00 at the Chamber office located in the Camp Fortunate Interpretive Center, 10 West Reeder.

The Chamber, in a cooperative gesture, is providing promotional materials and incentive coupons from participating Chamber merchants to each of the visiting Montana University System visitors. Please join Montana Western in extending a warm welcome to our system wide friends and colleagues.

Cowdrey's Establish Rodeo Endowment

Buz and Judy Cowdrey contributed to the University of Montana Western Foundation for the creation of an endowment. The annual interest will be used to provide scholarship opportunities for deserving and qualified Rodeo student athletes. "Judy and Buz Cowdrey have supported the Montana Western Rodeo program for many years", said the University of Montana Western Foundation Executive Director Tom Yahraes. "They hosted an annual reception for Western Rodeo Alumni when the College National Rodeo Finals was held in Bozeman, Montana. And they have continued to show their support in the years since." Buz Cowdrey received a BA degree from Western in 1962. He was inducted into the Western Rodeo Hall of Fame in 1991 and presented with the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2005. Buz and Judy are owners of Cowdrey & Company Construction and Rental Properties.

Emerti Professor Establishes Jeanette Rankin Scholarship

University of Montana Western Professor Emeriti Eve Malo has established an endowed scholarship for qualified students who are pursuing a degree in Social Science with an emphasis in Restorative Justice.

Malo has honored an historic Montana figure and leader with the creation of the Jeanette Rankin Restorative Justice Scholarship Endowment.

"Professor Malo has devoted her professional career to developing our awareness of social justice and tolerance,” said Montana Western Foundation Executive Director Tom Yahraes. “She has demonstrated the courage of her convictions through her work with Amnesty International, Montana Mediation Association and the Association for the Education of Children International. Her dedication earned her the Jeannette Rankin Peace Award. The prestigious award is presented to those who exemplify understanding and unity among people of diverse backgrounds, and peace on both a local and global level.”

Malo was born and grew up in Europe. She received her B.A. in Spanish and Social Science from Stanford University in 1963, a second B.A. in elementary education from San Jose State University in 1967, her M.A. in Cultural Studies from Adams State in 1973, and the Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of New Mexico in 1981. Malo taught in public schools from 1964-73 before beginning her college career in New Mexico, Colorado, and Montana.

The title of his presentation is "Natural Resource Law Enforcement Opportunities."

Montana Western Awarded $200,000

The University of Montana Western received $200,000 from the Montana Legislature to develop new certificate and associate programs that meet the needs of workers and employers in the area.

The award was part of a special appropriation from the Legislature given to campuses that have two-year programs.

One area in which new programs are being developed at Montana Western is in Health Care Administration. Graduates of these programs will be prepared to work for Med Claims as well as other health care employers in the area.

A Workforce Development Advisory Group is overseeing development of these programs with membership from the campus and community.

A Workforce Development Center will be located in the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center. The Center will be under the direction of Anneliese Ripley, Montana Western's Dean of Outreach and Research. This center will serve to connect employers and workers with training opportunities.

"Window on Western" Set for Friday, February 17

The University of Montana Western Alumni Association and Library and Technology Center is sponsoring “Window on Western”, a special night honoring alumni and friends and putting the spotlight on the entire campus community.

“Window on Western” is set for Friday, Feb. 17, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Keltz Arena.

This will be a special night for Western alumni to reconnect with Western and former classmates.

The night’s special activities include free food, door prizes, an online registration booth, campus display booths and tours.

In addition to the events in the Keltz Arena, there is also Frontier Conference basketball against Carroll College in the Straugh Gymnasium. The Lady Bulldogs tip-off at 6:00 p.m. followed by the Bulldogs at 8:00 p.m.
