Friday, July 28 2006
UMW_Gallery_17b.jpg Jenni Fallein and Sarah Krank are the featured artists in a new exhibit at The University of Montana Western Art Gallery/Museum called "Magnifications & Meditations."

Jenni Fallein is exhibiting eight paintings called "The Little Buddha Series." The paintings are an reflection on Jenni's recent experience with a terminally ill friend.

In her statement Jenni says, "the Little Buddha is a representation of the buddhi within us all. It is that small voice that speaks, not only from the mind, but also from the heart. It instructs us about our mortality and immortality."

"Jenni's intense use of color," says Gallery Director Randy Horst. "takes what could be a somber subject and wonderfully turns into a celebration of life."

Sarah Krank's work includes five large "constructed relief paintings." These impressive images combine abstracted images of the human figure with other subjects including landscapes, trees, and flowers.

"The glorious colors of these pieces makes them glow as if lit from within," says Horst.

Krank also is exhibiting four brightly colored pastel drawings of figurative poses. The drawings and relief paintings share the same interest in figurative line and contour enhanced by intense colors.

There will be a reception in the Art Gallery for the artists on Wed., August 30 from 7 to 8 p.m.

"Magnifications & Meditations" will continue at the Montana Western Art Gallery/Museum through Sept. 1.

The Art Gallery/Museum also includes the Seidensticker Wildlife Collection of trophy mounts and a permanent art collection including works by Russell and Paxson. Regularly scheduled gallery hours are Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and the gallery is always free. To arrange for special times or visits call the director at 683-7232.

Montana Shakespeare In the Parks Comes To Montana Western
Monday, July 24 2006
The University of Montana Western in conjunction with the Southwest Montana Arts Council presents Montana Shakespeare in the Parks’ presentation of "Love’s Labour’s Lost" at Jaycee Park (across from Beaverhead IGA) Thursday, July 27. Dinner at 5:30 p.m., play begins at 6 p.m.

Love’s Labour’s Lost is William Shakespeare’s delicious romp about four would-be scholars who have sworn off the fairer sex and are confronted with four lovely ladies with whom the fall in love. Will they keep their vow to be slaves to their education? Absolutely not. The blissfully entertaining courtships, fraught with comic stumbling blocks from the very beginning, fizz along merrily as convoluted and riotous romantic entanglements spread and ensnare the zany locals as well. The books are left to gather dust as we all are given an altogether different lesson in the importance of a hearty laugh on our way to true love.

Ignored completely for more than two hundred years after Shakespeare’s death, and produced rarely for the next one hundred and fifty, "Love’s Labour’s Lost" has been “rediscovered” by Shakespeare producers in recent years. Striking a chord with modern audiences who seem captivated by its accessible humor and charm, the breezy and effervescent play is warm, witty, and in the words of one Shakespearean scholar, “unexpectedly wonderful.”

"Love’s Labour’s Lost" will be directed by Shawn Douglass.

Montana Shakespeare in the Parks is part of the summer series “Dinner in the Park.” The performance is free and open to the public, so bring your family and friends, and get comfortable with a blanket and a picnic. For those not wanting to pack a picnic, dinner will be available for a nominal charge from the Beaverhead Chamber of Commerce. Dinner begins at 5:30 p.m. with the play at 6 p.m.
