"Celebrating Explorers" Title of New Exhibit at Gallery
Thursday, September 21 2006
UMW_Gallery_19aMedia.jpg The University of Montana Western Art Gallery/Museum has opened its 2006-07 season with a group exhibit called "Celebrating Explorers."

The exhibit will continue in the Corr and Hallway Galleries until Oct. 13, 2007.

The exhibit includes the work of 32 different artists from North Dakota with media ranging from paintings and prints to sculptures and ceramics. Each pieces relates to a journal entry from the Lewis & Clark expedition. Many of the artists are Native American, lending an interesting twist to the exhibit.

"Not only are the media and styles diverse," says Gallery Director Randy Horst, "but the interpretations also vary widely. While some pieces protest the changes brought to the Northwest by the Corps of Discovery, other pieces celebrate the beauty of the landscape and the dignity of the animals Lewis & Clark encountered. Some pieces illustrate the journal entries and others use the journals as inspiration for personal explorations. There is something here for every interest and artistic preference."

The North Dakota Art Gallery Association originally organized “Celebrating Explorers”. Its current tour of Montana is sponsored by the Montana Art Gallery Directors Association with funding by the National Endowment of the Arts, the Montana Coal Tax Fund, and the Montana Arts Council.

A free public reception for the exhibit will be held this Thursday, Sept.28, from 8:30 - 9:30 p.m. The reception is in connection with and following the "Dances with Words" reading by Australian poet David Gilbey at 7:30 p.m. in the CUP (basement of the library on the Montana Western campus).

The Art Gallery/Museum can be found at the south end of the first floor of Main Hall on the Montana Western campus. Gallery times are Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. To arrange for special times or visits call the director at 683-7232. The Gallery/Museum also houses a permanent collection of art, including works by C.M. Russell, Edgar Paxson, and Monte Dolack, and the Seidensticker Wildlife Collection of taxidermy from around the world. Lithographs by Livingston's Russell Chatham will be the next art show and will open October 23.

Montana Western Business Students Mean Business
Monday, September 18 2006
Once again, a number of University of Montana Western business students are working on community-based projects.

On 9/16 the Block 1 business communications class made formal presentations to two clients: Rick Hartz, Beaverhead County Planner and Gail Barnhart, Dillon Elementary Education Foundation.

Mr. Hartz requested development of guidelines and tips for homeowners in the county who may be members of an organized subdivision and homeowners association but who want their association to become more effective or for those homeowners who are interested in forming a new homeowners association.

Ms. Barnhart asked her team to create a solicitation/information letter, which the Foundation could send to district parents. The students on this project also had the opportunity to meet with the school board members as part of the process.

Each team was tasked with developing a creative marketing document, a radio ad, and a press release, which could be used by their clients.
