Western Rodeo Results at 57th Annual CNFR

The UM-Western rodeo team traveled to Casper, Wyoming for the 57th Annual College National Finals Rodeo.

Western's men's team finished tenth overall. Individually, Mac Erickson finished tenth in bareback; Jarrett Monroe finished 15th in saddle bronc; Shawn Downing, winner of the second go, finished 18th in steer wrestling; Matt Robertson and Tate Dempenwolf finished 21st in team roping; Mike Mori finished 25th in team roping. Jabe Anderson competed as an independent and finished fifth in steer wrestling.

The women's team had their share of bad luck and finished 26th. Bry Worthen finished 21st in breakaway roping and Lauren Watson finished 30th in barrel racing.

Western Rodeo at CNFR

The University of Montana-Western men's and women's rodeo teams travel to Casper, Wyoming for the College National Finals Rodeo, June 12-18.

Led by regional champs Tate Dempewolf, Shawn Downing, Mac Erickson, and Matt Robertson, the Western's men's team won the Big Sky Regional Title. Those four regional champs along with Michael Mori and Jarrett Monroe will compete for the national title. Western's Jabe Anderson, the Big Sky Region's Student Director, will compete at the finals as an independent.

Tate Dempewolf, a senior from Lindsay, won his third regional title in team roping, header. He also took second in tie down roping, and will compete in both events at Casper. Dempewolf finished fourth in regional All-Around standings. Shawn Downing, a senior from Helena, will go to the CNFR as the regional champ in steer wrestling. Downing finished sixth in the All-Around standings and eighth in tie down roping. Mac Erickson, a sophomore from won the regional title in bareback riding. He also placed second in the All-Around and fourth in bull riding. Jarrett Monroe, a junior from Browning, finished third in saddle bronc riding. He was second in the nation in All-Around at last year's CNFR. Michael Mori, a junior from Elko, Nevada, makes his second straight trip CNFR in team roping, heeler. He finished second in the region. Matt Robertson, a senior from Augusta, won the regional title in team roping, heeler.
“We are sending a balanced and very experienced team to the CNFR this year,” said Western rodeo coach Iola Else. The men are on a confident roll after winning the region.”

Bry Worthen, a junior from Dubois, Idaho, and Lauren Watson, a junior from Geyser, will represent the Western women's team at the CNFR. Worthern won her second Big Sky Region breakaway title in the past three years. At last year's CNFR, Worthern finished second in the nation, propelling the women's team to a second place finish. Lauren Watson, a transfer from Montana State, makes a return trip to the CNFR. She finished third in the region in barrel racing.

“I can't think of two young women that I would rather have represent
Western at the CNFR than Bry Worthen and Lauren Watson,” added Else. “Both girls have great talent and CNFR experience. Both can handle the pressure of the finals. I am so proud of both girls.”
