Rodeo Opens New Season
Thursday, September 6 2007
The University of Montanan Western rodeo team opens their 2007-2008 season at the Northwest College Trapper Stampede Rodeo, Friday, Sept. 7 and Saturday, Sept. 8.

Competition begins each day at 7 p.m.

The Bulldog men’s team is the defending Big Sky Regional Champions.

Coach Olie Else builds her team around a nice balance of rough stock and timed events cowboys.

Taylor Nahrgang is the defending regional champion in steer wrestling. He placed 10th at the 2007 College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR). Nahrganag’s younger brother Trey joins the program. He is the two-time Arizona high school steer wrestling champion.

Another CNFR veteran is Sam Levine, a threat in both tie-down roping and team roping. As a freshman, he was the regional tie-down roping champion and the reserve champion last year. Levine was the regional team roping heeler champion last year.

Alex Watson was the reserve team roping-heeler champion last year and finished third at the CNFR.

Kyle VanBiezen placed third in the region and second at the CNFR in tie-down roping.

Looking to score points in rough stock are Brian Dawson and Reed Hunsucker in saddle bronc, Chad Marquardt in bareback and Levi Hendrickson in bull riding. Wyatt Smith is a multi-threat as he competes in saddle bronc, steer wrestling, tie-down roping and team roping.

The Montana Western women’s team finished second last year in the Big Sky Region.

Else will build her women’s team around CNFR veterans Shaylee French and Amber Overstreet. French finished second in the region in goat tying and 16th at the CNFR and teammate Overstreet was third in the region and 17th at the CNFR. Goat tying receives depth with the addition of Lexi Archibek, the California State Champion last year.

French will also score points in barrel racing along with Archibek and Brandi Pederson to mention just a few of a very balanced and talented team.

In breakaway roping, Else will look to College of Southern Idaho transfer Jenna Bubak and Montana State transfer Brittnee Benson to add depth to another balanced and talented group.
