Sunwall, Scott and Finlay Earn All-Conference Honors

Three Lady Bulldog players were named to the 2005 Frontier Conference All-Conference Volleyball team.

Senior Katherine Sunwall of Great Falls was named the Most Valuable Player of the Conference. Sunwall led the league in kills (4.32 per game), attack percentage (.298)) and blocks (1.41 per game). She also led the league in points (total kills, service aces, solo blocks and assisted blocks).

Senior Lindsey Scott of Dillon, earned first team honors. She led the Frontier in assists with 11.75 per game.

Junior Jenny Finlay of Riverton, Utah earned second team All-Conference honors. Finlay was 11th in the league in both hitting percentage (.222) and points. She was ninth in digs with 2.91 per game.

Lady Bulldogs End Season

The Lady Bulldogs ended their 2005 season on a disappointing note as they lost to Carroll College 3-0 in the first round of the Frontier Conference tournament. Game scores were 28-30, 21-30 and 26-30.

Katherine Sunwall led Western with 15 kills followed by Shannon O'Keefe with eight. Jenny Finlay led the defense with 16 digs followed by Kendall Bradley with 12.

Western ends the season with a 16-13 overall record. The Lady Bulldogs finished third in the regular season with an 8-6 record.

Lady Bulldogs Open Conference Tourney Against Carroll

The Lady Bulldogs, the #3 seed, open the Frontier Conference tournament against the #6 seed, Carroll College Friday, Nov. 11 at 6:00 pm. The tournament is being played at the HYPR Complex on the Montana Tech campus in Butte.

Western finished the regular season with a 16-12 overall record and an 8-6 conference mark. Carroll, the defending regular season and tournament champions, finished the regular season with a 6-8 league record and a 13-14 overall record.

During the regular season, the Lady Bulldogs beat Carroll twice. Western won in Helena 3-0 and won in Dillon 3-1.

"This is going to be a very tough match," said Western coach Jenny Peterson. "Carroll is much better than their record. They have had a tough time with injuries this year. They are playing very good now and we will have to improve our play to win. We need to be more consistent."

The winner of the Western-Carroll match will advance to the semi-final round to face the winner of University of Great Falls-Rocky Mountain match. That semi-final match is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 12 at 1:00 pm.

Lady Bulldogs Close Regular Season With Loss to MSU-Northern

The University of Montana Western fell to MSU-Northern 3-0 in a Frontier Conference volleyball match in Dillon Friday night.

Western finishes the regular season with an 8-6 league mark and a 16-12 overall record. Northern finishes the regular season with 6-8 conference record and an overall record of 11-12.

Game scores were 28-30, 30-32, and 24-30. Northern controlled the tempo of the match and the Lady Bulldogs were always on the comeback trail. In game two, Western held a two point lead 29-27. A Lady Bulldog attack error and a kill by the Skylights' Tera O'Haire tied the game at 29. Northern took the lead on a service ace and Western tied the game with a Kendall Bradley kill. The Skylights sealed the win with a Western attack error and a put-away kill from Jasmine Mitchell. In game three, the two teams traded points and leads until the game was tied at 17-17. Northern went on a 9-1 run and and built a 26-18 lead. Down the stretch, Western could get no closer than four.

Jenny Finlay and Katherine Sunwall led Western with 14 kills apiece followed by Shannon O'Keefe with 11. Kendall Bradley led the Lady Bulldogs defense with 20 digs.

Julie Henderson led Northern with 16 kills followed by Jasmine Mitchell with 14. Emilee Madsen-Summers led their defense with 19 followed by Jordan Fox with 12 and Kelly Thorpe with 11.

Both teams will compete in the Frontier Conference tournament in Butte November 11 and 12.

Lady Bulldogs Lose to UGF

The University of Great Falls downed the University of Montana Western 3-1 in a Frontier Conference volleyball match from Dillon’s Straugh Gymnasium.

The loss drops Western to 8-5 in league play and 16-11 overall. Great Falls is now 10-3 in conference and 19-8 overall.

Western won the first game 30-23 but could not hold off the high powered UGF attack and dropped the next three 18-30, 18-30 and 28-30.

Katherine Sunwall led Western with 23 kills followed by Jenny Finlay with 10 kills. Kendall Bradley led the Lady Bulldogs in digs with 12 followed by Casey Barry with 12.

Four Great Falls players scored double digit kills led by Brittany Prater with 20 and then Claudia Jacobs with 18, Jennifer Wright with 13 and Jennifer Peterson with 10. Jacobs led the team in digs with 15 followed by Kari Schiller with 15 and Prater with 11.

Western hosts MSU-Northern on Friday, Nov. 4 at 7:00 p.m. while UGF travels to Salt Lake to face Westminster on Saturday, Nov. 5.

Lady Bulldogs Host UGF and MSU-Northern

The University of Montana-Western volleyball team hosts the University of Great Falls on Thursday, Nov. 3 and MSU-Northern on Friday, Nov. 4 in the final matches of the regular season. Both matches begin at 7:00 p.m. from the Straugh Gymnasium.

Western is currently third in the conference with an 8-4 league mark and 16-10 overall. Great Falls is second with a 9-3 conference record and an overall record of 18-8. Northern is in a fifth play tie with Carroll with a 5-7 league mark. The Skylights are 10-11 overall.

“This is a big weekend for everyone,” said Western coach Jenny Peterson. “There is a lot riding on every match, and the end result is where you are seeded in next week’s conference tourney.”

Western and UGF have already played three matches this season. Great Falls won 3-1 at their invitational tournament in early September. Western won 3-2 at their invitational tournament a week later. Great Falls won the first conference meeting 3-1.

In their only meeting of the year, Western downed Northern 3-1 in a conference match in October.

Western’s Katherine Sunwall leads the conference in kills, hitting percentage and blocks and teammate Lindsey Scott leads the league in assists.
