Volleyball Signs Two

Kyla Rasmussen, a 5-4 defensive specialist from Choteau, Montana and Nicole Mertens, a 5-4 libero/defensive specialist from Auburn, Washington, have signed Frontier Conference/NAIA letter of intents to play volleyball for the University of Montana Western according to head coach Katie Howells. The signings are the first for Howells as the Lady Bulldogs head coach.

Rasmussen was a two-year starter for Choteau as the Bulldogs advanced to the state tournament both seasons. In her senior season, Rasmussen recorded 185 kills, 208 digs, nine solo blocks and 63 assisted blocks. She also lettered in basketball and track. In track, she qualified for the state track meet.

“Kyla is an outstanding athlete,” said Howells. “She is a great addition to our program. Kyla will fit in very well at Montana Western. We are fortunate to have her in our program.”

Rasmussen will graduate this spring from Choteau High School. She is the daughter of Will and Darcy and Will Rasmussen.

Mertens is a 2004 graduate of Auburn Senior High School and will graduate this spring from Green River Community College. In high school, she received all-conference honors in both volleyball and track.
In her career at Green River, she earned All-Conference honors and was named the Conference Defensive Player of the Year. From the classroom, she was named to the Athletic Director Honor Roll.

“Nicole is very competitive and has a great work ethic,” added Howells. “She brings two years of college experience, which will make a her a big contributor to Western volleyball.”

Mertens will major in elementary education with a minor in early childhood education. She is the daughter of Robert and Sheri Mertens.
