Lady Bulldogs Nip Skylights in Havre
Sunday, January 27 2008
From the Montana Standard
Jamie Lake hit a jumper with less than a second left to play to lift Montana Western women to a 57-56 victory over Montana State-Northern Saturday in Havre.

UMW trailed by three with 13 seconds left on the clock when they got a steal and a timeout. Laura Shea scored on a layup, bringing Western within a point. The Bulldogs fouled, and the Skylights missed the free throw, and Lake grabbed the rebound, dribbled to Western’s key and fired the game winner.
“It was quite a finish,” said Western head coach Kevin Engellant. “That was a tremendous win for us, especially after a disappointing loss last night (at Great Falls). We came back and played well.

Lady Bulldog Upset at University of Great Falls
Saturday, January 26 2008
By GEORGE GEISE
Great Falls Tribune Sports Editor
There's a first time for everything in college basketball, especially for the bounce-back program at the University of Great Falls.
In the eight years since UGF reinstated its hoops teams, the Lady Argos had never beaten Montana Western. That streak ended in stunning fashion Friday night as coach Shawn Chaffin's team rallied in the second half to upset the Lady Bulldogs 68-59 before about 500 fans at McLaughlin center.
"Absolutely, that's the biggest win we've had," said Chaffin, in his second season at the helm. "Western is a great program, a great team ... they've been to nationals eight years in a row. "They're the last team we (UGF) hadn't beaten since basketball came back here."
The triumph boosted UGF to 2-4 in league play, 9-11 overall. Western fell to 2-4, 13-7.
Keaster, UGF's leading scorer the past three years, led all shooters with 21 points including four 3-pointers. She had two treys in an 18-4 spree midway through the second half that essentially broke the game open.
Western was up 29-25 at intermission after leading by as many as 10 points. The Lady Bulldogs used an early 9-0 run to grab an advantage they never lost, although a late 8-0 surge fueled by 3-pointers from Keaster and Holmlund cut UGF's deficit to two points.
Genna Rucker came off the bench to score seven points for Western, while Keaster had eight of her points by halftime.
Western's last lead came at 37-34 on Laura Shea's rebound basket with 15 minutes, 12 seconds to play. UGF then got consecutive field goals from junior forward Jocelyn Moore, who finished with 16 points, and never trailed again.
Great Falls used excellent accuracy from the foul line down the stretch to keep its lead. The Lady Argos made 17 of 22 free throws in the game, 14 coming in the second half.
"Great Falls shot the ball very well and deserved to win," said UMW coach Kevin Engellant. "In this league you have to play well for 40 minutes or you're in trouble. We played well most of the first half and probably should have been up by more, but we missed some easy shots."
Shea paced Western with 17 points, and Jill Dana and Chloe Mosey added 11 apiece. The Lady Bulldogs outrebounded UGF by 36-24, but couldn't convert those opportunities into points.
UMW travels to Havre for a Saturday night game against MSU-Northern.

Lady Bulldogs Cruise to Frontier Conference Win Over Rocky
Friday, January 11 2008
From the Billings Gazette.
The Lady Bulldogs just simply shot the lights out, knocking down nine 3-pointers in the first half and building a 27-point cushion en route to a 73-61 conquest over the Lady Bears. The Lady Bulldogs, 1-1 and 12-4, shot 9 of 13 from 3-point territory and 10 of 10 from the foul line in building a 51-27 halftime advantage
Western coach Kevin Engellant watched his Lady Bulldogs shoot a sizzling 69 percent on 3-pointers in the first 20 minutes, but then sweat out the second half.
"Rocky is just a good team. I knew that they would make some runs at us in the second half and they definitely did," he said. "Fortunately we had a big enough lead and were able to hold them off."
It was 49-22 at one point, as Western moved the ball around smoothly and hit from all around the arc.
Rocky, 1-2 and 8-11, responded with six 3-pointers in the second half to make things interesting. When Keri Siewert swished a 3-pointer from the side, the Lady Bears were within 63-56 with 4:55 to go.
But Western's Chloe Mosey scored off a couple of offensive rebounds in the next two minutes and the Lady Bulldogs pulled away again.
"They did a good job of getting open and finding shots and I didn't think we did a very good job of defending them," Rocky coach Brian Henderson said of his team's first-half woes. "We left them open too much."
Western's Jill Dana, a senior from Forsyth, fired in 21 points. She had 15 points and five of her six 3-pointers during the first half.
"She's a tremendous shooter," said Engellant. "She's definitely one of those players that you feel confident when she gets her feet set. She's having a great year for us."
Rocky received 17 points from Siewert and 15 from Liz Lewis. They combined to shoot 10 of 18 from 3-point territory.
UMW plays at Carroll College on Sat. Jan. 12.
