The University of Montana Western Lady Bulldog basketball team will have a busy weekend as they play three games in three days.

On Thursday, Nov. 29 and Friday, Nov. 30 they will compete in the Westminster Tournament in Salt Lake City, Utah. UMW plays the Williamette University Bearcats Thursday at 4 p.m. and the Dominican University Lady Penguins Friday at 2 p.m.

UMW then returns to Dillon to host Minot State on Saturday, Dec. 1. Tip-off is 4 p.m. from the Straugh Gymnasium.

The Minot State game will be broadcast in southwest Montana on KDBM Radio and on Internet from women’s basketball page on the Montana Western web site.

Montana Western is 6-1 on the season after beating Bluefield College 114-45 last Saturday. The 114 points breaks the school record of 107 set in 1990 against Mesa College.

“Playing three games in three days, with two of them being on the road, will be a challenge,” said UMW coach Kevin Engellant. Having Laura Shea back in the line-up this week gives us a big boost. This team seems to be improving with each game and we are having different players stepping up each game.

Willamette is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III, and the Northwest Conference.

The Bearcats are 2-3 on the season after a 63-54 loss to Corban College Tuesday night.

“Willamette is a very scrappy team that really likes to push the ball in
transition,” said Engellant. “They don't have a lot of size but they rebound well and like to create turnovers off their defense.”

Molly Fillion leads the Bearcats in scoring and rebounding with 17.2 ppg and 13.2 rebounds per game. Laura Payne also scores in double figures with 12.6 ppg. Willamette averages 61 ppg while giving up 62.

Dominican University of California is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the California Pacific Conference (Cal Pac).

The Lady Penguins enter the weekend with a 1-7 record after a 92-53 loss against Vanguard University on Nov. 24.

“Dominican has good quickness on the perimeter,” said Engellant. “They like to push the ball in transition and are very good at attacking the basket in the half court.”

Olivia Williams leads the Lady Penguins in scoring with 19.6 ppg followed by Jennifer Jackson with 19.5 and Jennifer Jackson with 10. Darcel Sanders leads the team in rebounding with 10 rebounds per game. Dominican averages 64 ppg but gives up 80.7.

Minot State is NAIA Division II school and a member of the Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC).

Going into the weekend, Minot is 6-3 on the season. The Beavers play at Montana Tech on Friday, Nov. 30. Minot beat Tech in October and has split with the University of Great Falls and Montana State-Northern. In their last game, Minot downed Brandon University 74-60.

The Lady Bulldogs downed Minot State 58-55 on Oct. 26 at Minot. Kelly Pankratz led Montana Western with 14 points in the win over Minot State.

Jill Dana leads the Lady Bulldogs in scoring with 14.9 points per game followed by Samantha James with 9.9 and Laura Shea with 9.8. Shea leads the team in rebounding with 9.3 per game followed by Chloe Mosey with seven and Samantha James with.
