Lady Bulldogs Face Nationally Ranked Opponents at Las Vegas Tourney

The University of Montana Western Lady Bulldog basketball team close out their non-conference schedule at the Las Vegas Shoot-Out at Las Vegas, Nev. on Saturday, Dec. 29 and Sunday, Dec. 30.
On Saturday, the Lady Bulldogs play the Lubbock Christian Lady Chaps at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, face the Georgetown College Lady Tigers at 9 p.m.
“These will be two tough games that should help prepare us for the start of the Frontier Conference season,” said UMW coach Kevin Engellant. “Lubbock Christian and Georgetown are both ranked in the Top 20 and both are very explosive teams.”
UMW is 10-2 on the season after losing to Dickinston State 55-61 on Dec. 15.
Lubbock Christian of Lubbock, Texas, is an NAIA Division I school and a member of the Sooner Athletic Conference. Going into the Las Vegas Shoot-Out, the Lady Chaps were 7-2 overall, 2-1 in league play and ranked #14 in the latest NAIA Coaches Top-25.
Lubbock Christian last played on Dec. 10 when they edged Houston Baptist 75-73. The Lady Chaps play Westminster College Friday night.
“Lubbock has a great post player in Carolyn Manning and a number of different players can shoot the three,” said Engellant. “They are very well coached and are solid defensively.”
Jordan Hampton and Manning lead Lubbock in scoring with 14.3 points per game (ppg). Sierra Wilcox is next with 10.3 ppg. The Lady Chaps average 72.3 ppg while giving up 62.1.
Georgetown College of Georgetown, Ky. Is an NAIA Division I school and a member of the Mid-South Conference. The Lady Tigers are 8-3 after losing to Trevecca Nazarene 84-85 on Dec. 20.
“Georgetown is a very good offensive team,” said Engellant. “They like to spread the court and use dribble penetration to get shots. We need to do a good job of defending Jayme Gilbert and make sure we keep them off the offensive boards.”
Gilbert leads Georgetown in scoring and rebounding with 17.5 ppg and 6.2 rebounds. Amy Schiller also scores in double figures with 10 points per game. Ashley Bell is second on the team in rebounding with 5.9 rebounds per game. The Lady Tigers average 75.5 ppg game while giving up 64.5.
Jill Dana is the lone Lady Bulldog scoring in double figures with 14.3 ppg. Genna Rucker is next with 9.8 ppg. Laura Shea leads UMW in rebounding with 7.4 rebounds per game followed by Chloe Mosey with 6.8 rebounds per game Samantha James with 6.3. The Lady Bulldogs average 73.8 ppg while giving up 55.1.

Lady Bulldogs Fall to Dickinson State

The Dickinson State University Blue Hawks downed the Montana Western Lady Bulldogs 61-55 in women’s non-conference college basketball game from the Straugh Gymnasium.
The loss drops UMW to 10-2 on the season while Dickinson is now 3-10 on the year. This is the third time the two teams have played this year with Dickinson winning 2 of 3. The three games were decided by a total of nine points.
Saturday night, the two teams first half shooting percentage was as frigid as the winter air. Montana Western hit 32% of their field goals while the Blue Hawks hit only 29%. The first half ended with the teams tied at 22.
Both teams found their offense in the first five minutes of the second half. The Lady Bulldogs scored first and built a 38-33 lead at 15:11 mark.
Dickinson tied the game at 38 on pair of Mindy Vanderpan free throws. Neither team would score over the two minutes. A three-point field goal by Brittany Mesa gave the Blue Hawks the lead.
Laura Shea gave UMW a 44-43 lead on a free throw at the 7:48 mark, but that would be the Lady Bulldogs last lead of the game.
Montana Western was forced to foul in the games final two minutes and the Blue Hawks clinched the win from the free throw line.
Mesa led Dickinson with 16 points followed by Juliet Masei with 15. Dickinson scored 13 points off of Lady Bulldog turnovers.
Montana Western was led by Kelly Pankratz with ten points. The Lady Bulldogs committed 24 turnovers compared to 16 for Dickinson.

Lady Bulldogs host Dickinson State

The Lady Bulldog basketball team hosts the Dickenson State Blue Hawks Saturday, Dec. 15. Tip-off from the Straugh Gymnasium is 6 p.m.
UMW has faced Dickenson State twice this season losing 58-60 loss at Dickenson N.D., and a 69-68 victory at Helena, Mont.
Dickenson State is 2-9 this season after a 60-71 loss last weekend to Minot State University.
Montana Western is 10-1 after a 92-43 victory over University of Alberta-Augustana last Friday; Dickenson State is the Lady Bulldogs only loss this season.
“We've had two great games with Dickinson so far this season and I expect this to be another close and hard-fought game,” said Lady Bulldog head coach Kevin Engellant. “They are very balanced offensively with good shooters on the perimeter to go with a solid post game. We need to handle their defensive pressure and execute offensively.”
There are three Frontier Conference teams in the top 25 NAIA Division I rankings, Carroll College, Lewis-Clark College, and Westminster College. The Lady Bulldogs have not made the top 25 rankings yet this year, but they received votes in the latest poll.
Brittany Mesa Leads the Blue Hawks with 9.4 points per game followed by Julliet Masel with 8.7 and Ashley Bakich-Emmons with 7.5. Mesa also leads the team in rebounds with 5.2 rebounds per game. Dickenson State averages 59.7 points per game while giving up 68.5.
Jill Danna leads the Bulldogs in scoring with a 14.9 point per game average, followed by Genna Rucker with 10.0 points per game and Chloe Mosey with 9.7. Laura Shea leads the team in rebounds with 7.6 followed by Mosey with 7.1. UMW averages 75.5 points per game while giving up 54.5.
The Lady Bulldogs will travel to Missoula, Mont., Dec. 19 to play the Lady Grizzlies in an exhibition game.

Lady Bulldogs Smoke Alberta-Augustana

The Montana Western Lady Bulldogs scored an easy 92-43 win over University of Alberta-Augustana in a women’s non-conference college basketball game from the Straugh Gymnasium.
Montana Western is now 10-1 on the season while Augustana falls to 5-13.
On a frigid cold Friday night, the Lady Bulldogs heated up the Straugh Gymnasium with red -hot shooting. UMW broke open a tight game with deadly accurate three-point shooting.
The Lady Bulldogs hit 9 of 13 three-point field goals in the first half, led by Jill Dana’s perfect six for six from long distance. Montana Western hit 58 percent of their first half field goals and held Augustana to a chilly 24 percent. UMW led 49-19 at the break.
In the second half Montana Western outscored the visitors from Canada 43-24.
Jaime Sparrow led Augustana with 10 points followed Avalon Greaves with nine.
Everyone on the Lady Bulldog roster scored led by Dana with 25 points. Also scoring in double digits was Chloe Mosey with 12 and Amanda Lidstrom with 11. Lidstrom led UMW in rebounding with seven followed Mosey, Laura Shea and Samatha James with six rebounds each.
Montana Western host Dickinson State on Saturday, Dec., 15. Augustana travels to Great Falls, Mont. to face the University of Great Falls tomorrow night (Dec. 8)

Lady Bulldogs Host Canadian Foe

The Montana Western Lady Bulldogs host the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings in a woman’s non-conference college basketball game Friday, Dec. 7. Tip-off is 7 p.m. from the Straugh Gymnasium.
Montana Western is 9-1 on the season after a 69-54 victory over Minot State last weekend.
Alberta-Augustana is 5-12 on the season after a 58-83 loss to King University last weekend.
“Augustana is a very perimeter orientented team,” said Lady Bulldog coach Kevin Engellant. “They like use their quickness to penetrate and kick to their shooters and they are very good attacking the basket. We need to keep improving on our rebounding and limiting them to one shot.”
Jessica Binder leads the Vikings with 14 points per game followed by Karla Binder with 12 and Jamie Sparrow with 10. Binder also leads in rebounds averaging 4.6 per game followed by Sparrow with 4.1.
University of Alberta-Augustana averages 67.3 points per game and gives up 71.19.
Jill Dana leads the Lady Bulldogs in scoring with 14 points per game followed by Genna Rucker with 7. Laura Shea leads the team in rebounding with 7.9 followed by Chloe Mosey with 7.2 and Samantha James with six.
Montana Western Averages 73.8 points per game and gives up 55.7.

Lady Bulldogs Take Minot State

The University of Montana Western Lady Bulldogs downed the Minot State Beavers 69-54 in women’s non-conference college basketball game from Dillon’s Straugh Gymnasium.
The Bulldogs are now 9-1 overall while Minot falls to 7-4 on the season.
The Bulldogs and Beavers battled for the lead the first half of the game. UMW scored a 21-16 point lead with 8:10 left. The two teams continued to battle and finished the first half with the Lady Bulldogs ahead 28-27.
The two teams exchanged points until the Lady Bulldogs achieved an eleven point lead they would not lose with 2:13 remaining. The game ended with 2 foul shots made by Montana Western's Kelly Pankratz.
UMW’s Chloe Mosey played an impressive game with 25 points and 10 rebounds for the Bulldogs. Genna Rucker contributed 10 points. Also Jill Dana scored 9 and Jamie Lake added 8.
Brittni Walker led Minot with 19 points followed by Lashay Bagsby with 10.
