Montana Western fell to Montana State-Northern, 55-72 in a women’s Frontier Conference basketball game.
The Bulldogs fall to 4-9 in the conference and 16-12 overall. Jaime Lake and Jill Dana led Montana Western with 12 points each followed by Laura Shea with 11 points. Samantha James led in rebounding with 5.
The Skylights are now 5-8 and 15-12 in the conference. The Skylights were led by Samm Schermele with 14 points followed by Dana Ball and Becky Sorenson both with 11. Stacie Barker led the team with 9 rebounds.
Over the first half the Bulldogs shot a poor 26 percent form the field. MSU-Northern shot 61 percent form the field and was able to overcome the Bulldogs 38-15 at the half.
Montana Western shortened the gap in the second half, but was unable to overcome the 23-point deficit.
Montana Western will play University of Great Falls tomorrow night. Tip-off 6 p.m. from the Straugh Gymnasium

Bulldogs Close Regular Season at Home

The University of Montana Western Bulldogs host the Montana State-Northern Skylghts Friday, Feb. 29 and the University of Great Falls Argos Saturday, Mar. 1 in two women’s Frontier Conference games. This is the last weekend of regular season games.
Tip-off is 6 p.m. from the Straugh Gymnasium.
Montana Western is 16-11 overall and 4-8 in the conference after two losses last weekend. The Bulldogs fell to Westminster 66-71 and Lewis-Clark State 64-88.
Jill Dana leads UMW in scoring with 13 points per game followed by Chloe Mosey with 10.35 points per game. Laura Shea leads the team in rebounding with 6.88 followed by Mosey with 6.69. Dana is ranked second in the conference in three-pointer percentage.
Western averages 68.67 points per game overall and 64 in the conference and gives up 69.82 and 69.75. They received votes this week in the latest coach’s poll.
The Skylights are 14-12 overall and 4-8 in the conference after a 77-43 victory over University of Great Falls last weekend.
MSU-Northern is led in scoring by Becky Sorenson with 12.22 points per game followed by Dana Ball with 10.00 and the Lights are ranked fourth in Division I field goal percentage. Northern ranks forth in the division in total rebounding defense. Their rebound leader is Stacie Barker with 10.69 rebounds per game. She is ranked third in Division I in rebounding.
They average 62.39 points per game and give up 56.27 points per game. In the conference they average 57.67 points per game and give up 59.08.
The Argos are 12-16 overall and 3-9 in the conference after their fall to MSU-Northern last weekend.
Laura Keaster leads University of Great Falls with 18.93 points per game followed by Jocelyn Moore with 12.21. Moore also leads the team with 8.41 rebounds per game. Keaster is ranked second in the conference in scoring and third in field goal average.
They average 68.89 points per game and give up 69.82 overall. In the conference the Argos average 60.33 and give up 71.75.
The Frontier Conference Tournament is Mar. 4-11 in Butte, Mont.
Parings will be released for the tournament on Sunday, Mar. 2.

Lady Bulldogs Fall to #10 Lewis-Clark

The Montana Western Bulldogs lost 64-86 to #10 ranked Lewis-Clark State in a Frontier Conference women's basketball game from Lewiston, Idaho.
The loss drops the Bulldogs to 4-8 in league play and 16-11 overall going into the final weekend of the regular season.
Lewis-Clark hit a sizzling 59 percent from the field including 9 of 18 from three-point land.
Chloe Mosey was the only Bulldog to score in double figures with 14. She also led the team in rebounds with nine.
UMW closes the regular season when they host MSU-Northern on Friday, Feb. 29 and the University of Great Falls on Saturday, Mar. 1.

Bulldogs Lose on the Road to Westminster

The Montana Western Bulldogs lost 66-71 to Westminster College in a women's Frontier Conference game from Salt Lake City..
The loss drops the Bulldogs to 4-7 in league action and 16-10 overall.
UMW controlled most of the first half and led by as many as nine. The Bulldogs led 35-32 at the halftime break.
Westminster opened the second half back to back three-point baskets. The second long-distance bomb gave the Griffins a lead they would never lose.
Four Bulldogs scored in double figures led by Laura Shea's 16. Also scoring in double figures were Jamie Lake with 12 and Genna Rucker and Samantha James with 10 each.
UMW faces #10 Lewis-Clark, Saturday, Feb. 23. Tipoff is 7 p.m. PST

Bulldogs Hit The Long Conference Road

The University of Montana Western Bulldogs hit the road for their longest road trip of the league season for a pair of Frontier Conference women’s basketball games.
Feb. 21- The Bulldogs will be in Salt Lake City, Utah to play the Westminster College Griffins. Tip-off is at 5:30 p.m.
Feb. 23- Montana Western will travel to Lewiston, Idaho to play the Lewis-Clark State Warriors. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
Montana Western is 4-6 in the Frontier Conference and 16-9 overall after splitting their two-game home series last weekend. The Bulldogs lost to Carroll College 62-68 and edged Rocky Mountain 70-68.
The Griffins are 7-3- league play and 20-6 overall. This past weekend, Westminster College nipped Montana State-Northern 49-47 and the University of Great Falls 77-76 in overtime. The two weekend wins propelled the Griffins from 23 to a tie for 19 in the latest coach’s poll.
The Bulldogs met Westminster earlier this season when Montana Western edged the Griffins 65-64.
Shannon Evans leads the Griffins and is third in the conference in scoring with 14.3 points per game followed by Elisa Leader with 12.46. Westminster averages 72.5 points per game while giving up 62.54. In league games, the Griffins average 63.8 ppg while giving up 60.7.
Lewis-Clark State is 9-1 in the Frontier Conference and 20-4 overall after defeating the University of Great Falls 90-62 and MSU-Northern 77-52 last weekend. L-C remains ranked tenth in the latest coach’s poll.
In the first January, the Warriors downed UMW 71-56 in Dillon.
Mandy Troutt leads the L-C in scoring with 12.71 points per game followed by Sadie Short with 11.54. Lewis-Clark State averages 78.79 points per game while giving up 54.58. The Warriors are second in the nation in scoring margin. In conference games, Lewis-Clark averages 74.5 ppg while giving up 54.8
Jill Dana leads Montana Western in scoring with 13.21 followed by Chloe Mosey with 10.09. The Bulldogs average 68.96 points per game and give up 60.5. In Frontier Conference games, the Bulldogs average 63.8 ppg while giving up 67.8.

Bulldogs Edged Rocky

The University of Montana Western Bulldogs held off a Rocky Mountain College comeback for a 70-68 Frontier Conference women’s game from the Straugh Gymansium.
With the win, the Bulldogs move to 4-6 in league play and 16-9 overall. Rocky drops to 4-6 in league play and 11-16 overall.
After Rocky scored on the game’s first possession, UMW out-scored the Bears 31-10 to lead by 19 with 9:51 left in the half.
After a timeout, Rocky exploded for 16 unanswered points to cut the Bulldog lead to five, 31-26 with six minutes remaining in the half.
Montana Western closed the half with a 9-3 run and led 40-29 at the break.
The second half opened exactly the first half did, only it was Rocky red-hot and the Bulldogs icy cold. The Bears outscored UMW 15-5 and trailed by one at the 13:02 mark.
The Bulldogs maintained a slim lead over the next six minutes. A Jenna Sawyer field goal at the 7:37 mark gave the Bears their first lead since the game’s opening basket.
The teams traded baskets over the next two possessions. The Bears grabbed their largest lead of the game, 56-53 after a Sarah Madinger three-point play.
The Bulldogs regained the lead after back-to-back field goals from Chloe Mosey and Jill Dana. UMW extended their lead to four with a Laura Shea field goal with 3:47 remaining.
With 1:03 remaining, a Dana 3-point field goal broke a 63-63 tie. The Bears failed to score on the following possession and were forced to foul for possession.
With 14 seconds remaining, Kelly Pankratz stepped to the free throw line for a one and one. The true freshman coolly sank both free throws to extend the Bulldog lead to five, 68-63.
Rocky scored with eight second remaining to cut the lead to three. Pankratz was fouled and again converted both ends of a one and one.
Rocky’s Keri Siewert scored Rocky’s final basket as the clock ran out.
Jill Dana led the Bulldogs with 24 points including 6 of 12 from three-point land. Mosey added 14. Jamie Lake led UMW in rebounds with nine followed by Shea with eight.
Four Bears scored in double figures led by Sawyer with 14. Madinger and Siewert each had 12 followed by Josie Evans with 10. Sawyer led the game in rebounds with 13.

Bulldogs Drop Close One to Carroll College

Montana Western Bulldogs fell to Carroll College 68-62 in a Frontier Conference women’s basketball game from Dillon’s Straugh Gymnasium.
The loss drops the Bulldogs to 3-6 in league play and 15-9 overall. Carroll is now 8-2 in the Frontier and 20-3 overall.
Carroll scored first on a Jolene Fuzesy three-point basket. The Buldogs answered on lay-up by Chloe Mosey. That set the pace for the rest of the half.
Montana Western took their first lead of the game on a Jill Dana field goal with 13:43 left. A Laci High three-pointer gave the Saints the lead back and they would maintain a slim lead over the next eight minutes
The Bulldogs recaptured the lead with 3:28 remaining in the half with another Jill Dana field goal and led 29-28.
Danielle Maloney’s long distance bomb gave the Saints back the lead and proved to be the winning basket. Carroll led 38-32 at the half.
The Saints took control in the opening minutes of the second half and built a seven point lead, 50-43 at the 8:34 mark. The Bulldogs then mounted a comeback and outscored Carroll 7-0 over the next minute and a half to cut the Saints’ lead to three.
UMW inched closer and trailed 54-56 with five minutes to play. Now forced to foul, the Bulldogs forced Carroll to the free throw line. The Saints made 9 of 10 free throws in the last two minutes to seasl the victory.
Jamie Lake led Montana Western with 15 points followed by Samantha James with 12 and Mosey with 10.
Fuzesy led Carroll with 19 points followed by Maloney with 17. Carroll was 15 of 18 from the free throw line.
Saturday night, the Bulldogs host Rocky Mountain College while the Saints go to Montana Tech. Both games tip-off at 6 p.m.

Bulldog Women Host Carroll College and Rocky Mountain

The University of Montana Bulldogs host the Carroll College Fighting Saints and the Rocky Mountain College Bears in Women’s Frontier Conference games this weekend.
The Bulldogs host Carroll College on Friday, Feb. 15 and Rocky on Saturday, Feb. 16. Tip-off for both games is 6 p.m. p.m. from the Straugh Gymnasium.
The games will broadcast in southwest Montana on KDBM radio and over the internet from the Montana Western women’s basketball web page.
On Friday, The University of Montana Western will take part in a nation wide effort to support the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s (WBCA) “Think Pink” Initiative.
The “Think Pink” Initiative is a contingent effort for the Women's Basketball Coaches Association to raise breast cancer awareness on basketball courts, campuses, and in communities across the nation.
Anyone wearing pink to Friday night’s game will be admitted free of charge. There will be various activities during the game including contests with all monies raised to be given to the Southwest Montana Mammography Program.
Montana Western is 3-5 in the Frontier Conference and 15-8 for the season after a 60-63 loss to Montana Tech Feb. 9.
The Bulldogs are led in scoring by Jill Dana with 13.4 points per game followed by Chloe Mosey with 10 ppg. Laura Shea leads the team in rebounding with 7.4 rebounds per game followed by Mosey with 6.96.
UMW averages 69.2 ppg while giving up 59.7. In league games, the Bulldogs average 63.2 ppg but give up 67.7 ppg.
The Fighting Saints are 7-1 in the conference and a 19-3 for the season after a 79-67 victory over Great Falls and a 70-53 win over MSU-Northern last weekend. Carroll is ranked 13th in the latest coach’s poll. The Bulldogs fell to Carroll College 56-71 in January at Helena.
Jolene Fuzesy leads the Saints in scoring with 20.6 ppg. She is tops in the conference and fifth in the nation in scoring. Fuzesy leads the conference and the nation in both 3-point field goal percentage (55.7) and free throw percentage (91.6). Also scoring in double figures, Danielle Maloney with 10.3 and Caitlin Courchaine with 10.4.
The Saints average 79.6 ppg and give up 58.4. In Frontier Conference games, Carroll averages 76.1 ppg and gives up 66.3. The Saints lead the nation in 3-point field goal percentage (45.1)_
Rocky Mountain College is 3-6 in the conference and 10-15 for the season after losing to the University of Great Falls 72-81and a 68-61 victory over MSU-Northern last week.
The Bulldogs defeated Rocky Mountain College 73-61 earlier this season.
Gretchen Wall leads the Bears in scoring with 12.2 ppg followed by Liz Lewis with 11.5. Jenna Sawyer leads the team in rebounding with 6.7 rebounds per game followed by Wall with 6.04.
Rocky averages 68.2 ppg and gives up 66.6. In conference games, The Bears average 63 ppg while giving up 66.

Montana Western Participates in Think Pink Initiative

The University of Montana Western will join schools around the nation from universities to junior colleges to high schools to support the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) “Think Pink” Initiative.
Montana Western will “Think Pink” on Friday, Feb. 15 when the Bulldog women host Carroll College in a Frontier Conference game. Tip-off is 6 p.m. from the Straugh Gymnasium.
Fans wearing pink will be admitted free to the contest. The Bulldog players will wear pink socks while the coaching staff will wear pink ties.
“The WBCA has done a wonderful job with their "Think Pink" initiative and we are proud to have our basketball program take part in something as important as this,” said Bulldog coach Kevin Engellant. “Each of us have had our lives touched in one way or another by cancer. "Think Pink" is one way to honor them and continue to raise awareness.”
Judy Siring of Farmers Union Insurance is making a donation for each free throw made by the Bulldogs during the game. Tom Bramlette of Bramlette & Company Realtors is making a donation for each three-point basket made by the Bulldogs. Kasey Briggs and Phil Willett, the voice of the Bulldogs on KDBM radio, will make a donation for each Bulldog assist.
There will be raffles and prize giveaways throughout the game.
All monies raised will go to the Southwest Montana Mammography Program of Barrett Hospital and Health Care.
The “Think Pink” initiative is a global, unified effort for the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond.
The week set aside for this year's initiative is Feb. 8 - 17. There are over 900 schools participating in the “Think Pink” initiative.

Bulldogs Drop Conference Game to Montanan Tech

The Montana Western Bulldogs lost to Montana Tech 63-60 in a women's Frontier Conference game from Butte, Mont.
The Bulldogs trailed 30-20 at the break and scored the first seven points of the second half to tie the game at 43 midway through the half when freshman Jamie Lake buried a pair of free throws.
“We did some good things to get back in the game,” Western coach Kevin Engellant said. “We just could never get the lead. That was key.
“We had a couple crucial turnovers when the game was tied, and it just seemed like we could never get over the hump.”
The Orediggers rebounded Western 50-29. Engellant said rebounding was the difference in the game.
“The stat of the game was rebounding,” he said. “We kept giving them second and third possessions.”
Senior Laura Shea scored 18 points to lead the Bulldogs, who fell to 3-5 in the Frontier and 15-8 overall.
The Bulldogs are home this Friday and Saturday against Carroll College and Rocky Mountain College.

Bulldog Women Travel to Montana Tech

The Montana Western Bulldogs travel to Butte, Mont. for a Frontier Conference women’s basketball game against the Montana Tech Orediggers. Tip-off is 6:00 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9 in the Kelvin Sampson Court.
The game will be broadcast in southwest Montana on KDBM radio.
The two teams last met in early January when Montana Tech defeated UMW 79-88. In the win, Tech hit 15 three-point field goals.
The Bulldogs are 3-4 in conference play and 15-7 overall after defeating Johnson and Wales University 73-54 last weekend.
Montana Tech is 2-5 in league play and 9-12 overall. The Orediggers closed the first half of the conference season with a 55-51 victory over the University of Great Falls.
Jessie DePell leads Montana Tech with 12.9 points per game followed by Jenessa Todd with 9.2 ppg. Natalie Shaw leads the team in rebounding with 6.2 rebounds per game.
The Orediggers average 69.7 points per game while giving up 66. In conference play, Tech averages 58.6 ppg while giving up 70.5.
Jill Dana leads the Bulldogs in scoring with 13.68 points per game followed by Chloe Mosey with 10. Laura Shea leads the team in rebounding with 7.4 rebounds per game followed by Mosey with 7.1.

Bulldogs Sign Bigfork Star

Hattie Bowen, a 5’8” guard from Bigfork, Mont. has signed a NAIA/Frontier Conference letter of intent to play basketball for the University of Montana Western, according to head women's coach Kevin Engellant.
Bowen earned all-conference basketball honors her junior year. This year, she averages 11 points and four rebounds per game. Bowen also lettered in track her sophomore and junior years.
“Hattie will be an outstanding addition to our campus and our basketball program,” says Engellant. “She is a hard worker both in the classroom and on the basketball court. Hattie is athletic, a tremendous shooter, and she comes from great basketball family. She is a gym rat and because of her dedication and love for the game, she will continue to improve her basketball skills.”
From the classroom she was selected to the National Honor Society and earned all-state academic honors. Hattie maintains a 3.8 GPA and is a member of the Biology Club and the service club, Interact. Her UMW major is undecided.
“I decided to sign with Montana Western because of their very successful program,” said Bowen. “I feel comfortable with the coaching staff. All around, it feels like a good fit for me.”
Hattie will graduate from Bigfork High School this spring. She is the daughter of Bruce and Joanie Bowen.

Lady Bulldogs Host Johnson and Wales

The Montana Western Lady Bulldogs take a break from conference play to host the Johnson and Wales University Wildcats in a women’s college basketball game Friday, Feb. 1. Tip-off is at 7:00 p.m. from the Straugh Gymnasium.
The game will be broadcast in southwest Montana on KDBM radio and will be webcast from the Montana Western women’s basketball web page.
The Lady Bulldogs are 14-7 for the season and 3-4-conference play after going 1-1 last weekend. Montana Western edged MSU-Northern 57-56 and lost to The University of Great Falls 59-68.
Johnson and Wales is an NAIA Division II School from Denver, Colorado. The Wildcats are 1-19 after a 32-49 loss to Oklahoma Panhandle State on Monday.
The two teams last met during the 2005-06 season. The Bulldogs scored an easy 92-48 win over Johnson and Wales.
Brook Durant leads Johnson and Wales in scoring and averages 11.06 points per game followed by Sara Fitzpatrick with 10.17. Jacinda Baumann leads the team in rebounding with 8.72 per game followed by Andrea Austin with 7.5.
The Wildcats average 50.45 points per game and give up 79.8.
Jill Dana leads the Lady Bulldogs in scoring with 14 points per game followed by Chloe Mosey with 10.1 points per game. Laura Shea leads the team in rebounding with 7.8 followed by Mosey with seven.
Montana Western averages 69.5 points per game and gives up 59.9.
The Lady Bulldogs return to conference play Feb. 9, when they travel to Butte, Montana to face off against Montana Tech. Tip-off will be at 6:00 p.m.
