Wednesday, July 25 2007
For the fifth time in seven years, the University of Montana Western women’s basketball team is ranked in the top 10 of the Women’s Basketball Coach’s Association (WBCA) Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll.
Montana Western is ranked sixth with a team GPA of 3.58.
The Lady Bulldogs have been named to the WBCA Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll for seven straight years and were ranked as high as No. 2 in 2004-05.
“When you look at our team GPA the past seven years and what we have done with the WBCA,” said head coach Kevin Engellant. “That says a lot about the student athletes we have in our program. They take a lot of pride in their achievements. That is what we talk about from day one. Yes, they are here to play basketball, but their number one priority is getting an education.”
The WBCA Top-25 Honor Roll recognizes teams throughout the nation that have the highest grade point averages (GPA) for the 2006-2007 season based upon nominations submitted by WBCA-member coaches.
"It always brings the WBCA esteemed pleasure to recognize such prominent women's basketball programs that have committed themselves on the hardwood and in the classroom," said WBCA CEO Beth Bass. "Each of these teams lead by example and have set a benchmark of success academically among their peers and in the sport."
Montana Western was one of four Frontier Conference teams honored. Westminster College was ranked 11th, Lewis-Clark State was ranked 17th and Montana State-Northern was ranked 20th.
