Friday, August 24 2007
Katherine Sunwall’s basketball career is not over. Sunwall, a 2007 graduate of the University of Montana Western, will play professional basketball in Finland beginning in September.
Sunwall will play for Pussikukat, a 1st Division team from Vantaa, a city outside of Helsinki. Last season, Pussikukat advanced to the semifinals of the Finnish Cup and finished with an overall record of 17-11.
“I am excited to have the opportunity to play professional basketball,” said Sunwall. “Not only to take my game to the next level, but the opportunity to travel to somewhere new and learn about the people of Finland and their customs. I consider it a tremendous learning experience. God gave me the ability so I am going to use it to glorify him.”
The Great Falls, Mont. native finished her career at Montana Western last winter. She was named Player of the Year in the Frontier Conference. Sunwall was the league’s Defensive Player of the Year for the third straight year and was a four-time first team All-Conference selection.
She was a first team NAIA All-American and a first team NAIA WBCA/Kodak All-American selection.
Sunwall is the second player in the history of women's basketball at Montana Western to score over a 1000 points and over a 1000 rebounds. She is tied for third on the all-time scoring list with 1605 points and is the all-time rebounding leader with 1098.
“This is a great opportunity and experience for Katherine,” said Montana Western coach Kevin Engellant. “Because of her tremendous work ethic she continues to improve her basketball skills. Katherine has the attitude and drive to succeed on the professional level.”
Sunwall joins former Montana State player Whitney Connolly on the Pussikukat roster.
