  1. Policy

The University of Montana Western has established regulations by which its members must abide and procedures by which its organizations function. These regulations are necessary to provide a campus atmosphere conducive to the intellectual and personal development of all members of the UMW community.

  2. Purpose

The intent of academic affairs policy is to facilitate an understanding of the rights, freedoms, and obligations of students. As members of an academic community, students are expected to conduct themselves in accordance with the formal expectations of the University. Students, like all members of the University, assume the responsibility to conduct themselves in concert with the objectives and standards of conduct established by the University. Students have the right to appeal the decisions made through this process.

  3. Procedures

The Academic Admissions & Standards Committee is authorized to interpret policies and make determinations regarding admission, readmission, and appeals for waiver of academic requirements. The Committee shall adhere to the policies stated in the current UMW Student Handbook, Yearly Course Schedule, and Catalog. Such institutional policies include published deadlines, required grade point averages, and residency and admissions policies. Requests for policy waiver shall be initiated by submission of a written request to the Academic Admissions & Standards Committee through the Committee Chair or through the Registrar’s Office. The AASC meets the first Tuesday of each month, when appeals warrant. Appeals must be submitted ten (10) days before the scheduled meeting to give committee members an opportunity to review the documentation.

Procedures to be followed for a student to appeal a grade, a University policy, or concerns regarding faculty or administration are published in the UMW Student Handbook.
