HOME Athyrium microphyllum (`Akolea)

Woodsiacae

Endemic

This looks similar to Diplazium, but the fronds are smaller. Both species have spore capsules in a chevron pattern. Athyrium can be distinguished most easily from Diplazium by the presence of tiny hairs sticking up from the dorsal leaf surface.

Lepidoptera collected from this plant in the Alaka`i Swamp:

H. euclidias is a generalist fern feeder. Batrachedrodes are tiny caterpillars that feed on the spores.
