Faculty Members Awarded for Service-LearningService-learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities. Service-learning seeks to create students who are active, committed, and informed citizen leaders in their communities. The Center for Service-Learning called for nominations that were judged by individuals throughout the campus community. The two awards were given to: Ms. Rebecca Knotts who involved her Women's Literature Class in service-learning by organizing, suppporting, and promoting UM-Western's "Love Without Fear Week." Within the week her class promoted campus-wide awareness of sexuality and sexual assault. The activities created dialogue and the opportunity for myths to be dispelled, an important first step in challenging our understanding and beliefs about sexuality and sexual assault. Dr. Nili Luo who involved her Early Childhood Professional Class in successfully applying for a $1500 grant for Curious Minds: Early Care and Educational Center to buy a new computer for children to use and supply math and science equipment. Class members also sponsored booths at the Week of the Young Child Festival and volunteered their time in early childhood settings.
