How can the Center for Service-Learning assist you?

The Center for Service-Learning strives to address community needs with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experiences of UM-W students, teach civic responsibility to UM-W students and strengthen communities in the UM-W area.  One way the Center for Service-Learning achieves this goal is to work with faculty, students and community partners to create and implement service-learning opportunities in the campus Experience One block and string courses.  The Center for Service-Learning can help by:

  • familiarizing faculty with what service-learning is, how it enhances specific subjects, and provide information on how to incorporate service-learning into syllabi

  • giving presentations to students to teach them about the Center for Service-Learning services and why volunteering is an important part of civic education

  • acting as the liaison between faculty and a community non-profit in order to build a relationship between the two and create a positive service-learning experience for students

  • providing faculty with up-to-date research about the impacts of service-learning and methods for best practice

  • informing faculty about funding opportunities to support service-learning projects

In the Spring Semester, The Center for Service-Learning will be accepting nominations for an award given to a faculty member who uses outstanding service-learning as a teaching technique in one of their classes during the 2005-2006 academic year.  Last year, Ms. Rebecca Knotts and Dr. Nili Luo were both awarded for implementing service-learning into one of their courses.

The center encourages faculty members to be in touch by using the resources available in the office or keeping the office aware of service-learning activities implemented.
