Originally from Minnesota, Joe arrived in Dillon in 1995. In 1999, he started as a student at Montana Western, and then became a student employee coordinating programs for Elderhostel/Rhodes Scholar and teaching outdoor education and low ropes programs for the Birch Creek Outdoor Education and Conference Center. Following his graduation from UMW in 2003, he assumed the position he still holds today as the Program Director of the center. Joe is also a professionally certified ski instructor with the Professional Ski Instructors of America (PSIA) and is a Certified Alpine coach with the United States Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA). As the senior instructor at Maverick Mountain Resort, he has spent the last 18 years sharing his love of skiing with others. His experiences gained through being a member of the Montana Western family, an outdoor educator, and a career skier have forged his educational philosophy and allowed him to follow his passions. Joe feels very fortunate to have had the opportunity to surround himself with incredible influences and an environment that is conducive to personal and professional growth. “My outdoor education philosophy is to enhance people’s awareness, understanding, and appreciation of natural systems through inquiry-based activities and cooperative problem solving thus influencing the next generation of informed decision makers.”
