The NWCCU accreditation standards state that online courses should require “regular and substantive interactions.” For most instructors teaching online, that means using the Moodle discussion forums. In order to support faculty in creating more meaningful asynchronous discussions, this session will share four ways to reframe the purpose of a discussion, three tactics to elicit better interactions between students, two methods for ensuring students cognitively engage with a discussion, and one suggestion to improve all asynchronous discussions. We’ll also look at ways Moodle’s built-in features can help instructors organize discussions.
