Packing and Outfitting Symposium at the Montana Center for Horsemanship - Of Horse, Human and Nature Conference

Free to all UMW Students: Half day Packing and Outfitting Symposium with the famous Nine Mile Packstring of mules and horses from the US Forest Service.

Horse and Mule Pack strings are valuable tools in managing the 191 million acres which make up the national forests, America’s Great Outdoors. These lands were set aside over 100 years ago to provide for the needs of the American people in ways that also protect the environment. Today, while there are numerous smaller mule teams serving the wilderness needs of individual forests, there are only two full regional specialty pack strings serving U.S. Forest Service needs throughout multiple States: (1) the Rocky Mountain Region Specialty Pack String, supporting forests in Colorado, Eastern Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas and South Dakota; and (2) the Northern Region Pack Train, serving Montana, Northern Idaho, North Dakota and Northwestern South Dakota and hosted at the Ninemile Ranger District.

Our friends from the Ninemile District will be joining us to share hands on demonstrations and share information about career and seasonal professional and individual job opportunities as well as take you into the day to day existence of the working horses and mules of the USFS.
