The commencement ceremony will begin at 10:00 a.m. in the Straugh Gymnasium. All graduates need to arrive dressed in their cap and gown no later than 9:00 a.m. at the Keltz Arena to begin processional line-up at 9:15 a.m. Graduates will line up in a specific order, by last name based on degree and major.
Graduates requiring disability accommodations during Commencement must notify the Registrar’s Office by calling (406) 683 7214 no later than April 10, 2022. Please specify services required.
Graduates cannot carry items into the ceremony; please leave all valuables with family members. (i.e. purses, backpacks, jackets, beach balls, frisbees, bubbles, or noisemakers.) All electronic devices must be turned off prior to the start of processional.
Seating for Guests
Once maximum capacity is met in Straugh Gymnasium, guests will be seated in the Keltz Arena. There we will provide a live steam viewing of the Commencement Ceremony and seating for guests.
Ushers will be on hand to help guests find their way and provide any needed assistance with accessibility in the BARC. Registered service dogs are welcome. Pets are not allowed. To request specific services in advance, please contact Becky Stuart at 406-683-7214 or [email protected].
Once the Commencement Ceremony has concluded and the graduates have been escorted out of Straugh Gymnasium, there will be a reception for graduates and their guests on the Tundra. Graduates will have the opportunity to congregate with friends and family while enjoying light refreshments. Each department’s flag will be posted on the Tundra for photo opportunities with attending faculty members. In case of inclement weather, the reception will be relocated to the Keltz Arena.
Parking on campus is available for graduates and their guests, as well as UMW faculty, staff, and visiting dignitaries. As we are expecting a large crowd, please allow for extra time as on-campus parking will fill quickly. Parking attendants will help direct traffic once parking in the BARC lot is full. Drop off only will be available near the BARC, and overflow parking is available in the Emerick Art Studio parking lot, and city streets on and around campus. Several handicap parking spots are available on campus but will fill quickly. Please ask a parking attendant if you need assistance finding reserved handicap parking or getting to the BARC from your parking spot.
Please review our campus map to the different locations used for Commencement and your parking options.
Regalia (Cap, Gown, and Tassel)
Be sure to order your regalia through Signature A no later than April 8, 2022 to avoid extra shipping costs and last minute stress. Announcements, diploma frames, and other option items are available for purchase. Black cap and gown are required to participate in commencement. Graduates are welcome to decorate their mortar boards (cap) to be worn during the Commencement ceremony.
Commencement is a celebration and professional special event marking the end of your time at UMW and a launch into the next stage of your life. Graduates are encouraged to dress professionally to mark this special occasion.
Tassels should be worn on the left side of your cap. At the end of the Opening ceremony, you will be instructed as a group when to turn your tassel to the right, signifying the formal awarding of your degree.
