Hands-on Innovation during the Summer X-Block

December 15, 2017

This summer, Dr. Estee Aiken will again team up with the UMW School of Outreach to provide an innovative offering of EDEC 332: Science and Social Studies for Early Childhood (K-3). Students in the course will engage in eight weeks of online preparation before putting their skills to work as lead teachers at a week-long summer camp for children ages 5-10.  Through this unique approach to content delivery and authentic application in a field setting, teacher candidates will:

• Develop meaningful science and social studies experiences focused on hands-on explorations of 2018 X-Camp topics within the theme, “Under the Big Sky.”
• Access campus resources, including up-to-date technology and the Campus Garden.
• Work with local experts and guest speakers to share lessons about wildlife, art, and ecology.
• Engage elementary-age children from Dillon and other Montana communities in a cutting-edge summer camp, full of exciting educational activities!
