The Cost of Attendance (COA) is the ESTIMATED cost of completing a full year at the University of Montana Western (UMW) and includes weighted averages for direct educational costs (tuition, fees, housing, food, books and supplies), and other indirect educational expenses (miscellaneous personal expenses, transportation, loan fees & housing/food if living off-campus). Your living arrangements and residency are also used to determine your COA.

Food & Housing shows the cost on the student billing for on-campus students. An estimated average is used for off-campus students and will not be reflected on the student billing.
The COA does not reflect the actual bill that you will owe to UMW. Your actual bill will be determined based on direct costs mentioned above and your enrollment. You can view your bill in your DAWGS account. If you have any questions concerning your bill, contact Business Services. If you have questions concerning your food/housing reflected on your student account, contact Residence Life. Students should calculate their individual costs of attending using the Financial Aid Worksheet.
Tuition and fees do not increase between the credit hours of 12 to 19. At 20 credit hours, there is additional tuition and fees charged per credit hour. Financial Aid does not increase the COA but the student is allowed to submit a request to the Financial Aid Office for a potential increase in their COA to determine if it would increase their eligibility. If approved, the increase may allow eligibility in the areas of work study or student loans. The request will be reviewed on a case by case basis. Tuition and fees are subject to approval and/or change by the Montana Board of Regents of Higher Education. For financial aid purposes, students are packaged at the full-time COA and is updated as of Census (15th day of each semester) to reflect your enrollment for the semester. A reduction in COA may cause a reduction in your financial aid eligibility. Contact the Financial Aid Office with any questions or concerns at 406-683-7511 or stop by the office located in the Short Administration Building.
Beginning with 2024-2025, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) will not reflect the living arrangements for the student. Be sure to monitor your award notification within your DAWGS account for accuracy. If the COA is not correct for your living arrangements, you must contact the Financial Aid Office immediately to update your COA. You may stop by the office or submit an email from your UMW email address to [email protected] with a statement of what your living arrangements are. Due to our COA being finalized each semester as of the Census date, you must contact the Financial Aid Office prior to the Census date of each semester.
