Student Leadership Academy

Purpose: 

The Student Leadership Academy at the University of Montana Western is a transformative leadership development experience grounded in the principles of the Bulldog Way. Designed to cultivate confident, ethical, and service-minded leaders, the curriculum empowers students to lead with integrity, resilience, accountability, and purpose.  

Through interactive workshops, experiential learning, mentorship, and community engagement, participants develop the skills to communicate effectively, collaborate across differences, solve complex challenges, and inspire positive change. Rooted in the unique culture and values of Montana Western, the academy prepares students to become leaders who make a meaningful impact on campus, in their communities, and throughout their professional lives. 

Semester One Line-Up: 

Sept 30th—DNA of Leadership: Values-Based Decision Making and Leadership  

This session is hosted by UMW Director of Student Life Dani Sullivan and is rooted in Brene Brown’s Dare to Lead Principles that great leaders guide their decision making through established core values. AKA: leading from the heart.

Oct 21th—Potential Unleashed 

Brigadier General Trenton Gibson is Adjutant General for the State of Montana; serving as Commander of the Montana National Guard and the Director of the Department of Military Affairs.  He is also a beloved Alumni at the University of Montana Western class of 1999.  During this evening session, we get a glimpse into leadership at one of the highest levels, and the path, skills, and lessons that took him there.

Nov 18th—Not Yet Perfect? Apologizing as a Necessary Leadership Skill 

As a licensed athletic trainer, and beloved professor on campus, Janelle Handlos is a mentor for many students who lean on her on their path to success.  Her session dives into the art of apologizing and how it may just be the key to unlocking powerful relationships and leadership.

Dec 2nd—Collective Impact  

During our meeting in December, we will put our leadership development into action by giving back to the Dillon community together. Writing Christmas cards to Veterans, assembling grab bags for the Women’s Resource Center, and more!

Students: 

  • Any student currently serving in a student leadership role on campus. 
  • Any student looking for opportunities to step up and lead. 
  • Any student with great leadership potential who could benefit from fine-tuning their skills. 

Staff/Faculty: 

  • Anyone interested in mentoring and guiding our developing student leaders. 
  • Anyone who wants to attend to bring fresh leadership concepts into their departments, campus jobs, clubs, or student programs
