Accommodations

Reasonable accommodations are changes in the learning environment which “level the playing field” for students with disabilities. Students with disabilities initiate the request for accommodations and/or services by registering with Disability Support Services (DSS), located in the Dean of Students offices, or at [email protected]. Students must do this in a timely manner, communicate with faculty regarding their approved academic accommodations, and work with DSS as needed.

Accessible Course Design

When accessibility is incorporated into an initial design, users benefit from its usability and flexibility. Creating accessible course content will build inclusive learning opportunities for all students.

Audio Books

DSS is able to help eligible students with alternative formats for course materials such as textbooks. Alternative formats include accessible (text-based) PDF, EPUB, plain text (.txt), rich text (.rtf), Braille, and Word documents.

Audio Description

Audio Description is a narrative audio that describes key visual or non-verbal content in visual media. Audio Description is sometimes referred to as video description.

Audio Recording Lectures

DSS approves audio record lectures as a reasonable accommodation. When this accommodation is approved, students may use their smartphones, computer software, such as Genio (formerly Glean), tablets, digital recorders, and other electronic devices to record class lectures.

Calculator Use

Using a calculator can be a reasonable accommodation for students whose disabilities impact their mathematic computations.

Closed Captions

Closed captions are a textual representation of the meaningful audio in a media file. DSS provides captioning services for students who require captioned media by working with faculty.

Flexibility with Attendance & Deadlines

Faculty establish course attendance, participation expectations, and assignment policies. DSS approves the flexibility accommodation when a student’s disability severely affects their course attendance or assignments on occasion.

Guide to Request Approved Accommodations

Once your accommodations are approved by DSS, you must contact your professor so your professor can explain how the accommodations will be implemented in the course. Follow this guide below to navigate the process.

Note Takers

DSS is searching for volunteer student note takers currently enrolled in courses. Serving as a peer note taker is a meaningful opportunity to assist fellow students while enhancing your academic and organizational skills.

Note Taking Accommodations

Students who experience barriers to capturing lecture content can qualify for note taking accommodations.

Priority Registration

Priority registration allows enrolled qualified students with disabilities to register early for autumn and spring semester courses.
