The “125 Objects for 125 Years” art exhibit was held in conjunction with several events celebrating the University of Montana Western’s continued innovation over the past 125 years.
One of the featured artists, Melody Rice, graduated in 2002 from the University of Montana Western. She now manages an art therapy studio in the Finlen Hotel in historic uptown Butte, Mont.
While attending Montana Western, Rice worked with the faculty to create a series of independent courses with an art therapy focus.
“I worked with Psychology professor Sandra Oldendorf to arrange independent psychology courses so I would be ready for graduate school,” said Rice. “Montana Western was also the place where I honed my skills in copper enamel work, working with Professor Barney Brienza.”
Rice attended Southwestern College in Santa Fe, New Mexico for her graduate program in art therapy.
In addition to her art therapy studio, Rice continues to create original works of art and jewelry. Examples of her work were displayed in the Fine Arts Gallery as part of the “125 Objects for 125 Years” exhibit.
The show featured miniature works, roughly 5 by 5 inches, submitted by community members, students, faculty, staff and alumni.
“An eclectic mix of pieces—some lighthearted, some serious, some clever, some beautiful, some refined, some experimental—all showcasing the talent and creativity of the people who have come together at UMW, commemorated the University’s past 125 years,” said Fine Arts Gallery Coordinator, Aja Mujinga Sherrard.
Submissions on display included photography, drawings, paintings, sculpture, collage, ceramics, and mixed media.
The show highlighted 125 years of the University of Montana Western’s vigorous innovation and success.
