March 27, 2019

The University of Montana Western Fine Arts Department, as part of the 2018-19 Bank of Commerce Performing Arts Series, with special arrangement with Playscripts Inc., presents “Good Kids” by Naomi Iizuka. Performances will be held in the Beier Auditorium April 4-8 at 7:30 p.m.

The production features twenty Montana Western students. Some act in the play and others serve in roles including lighting designer, assistant director, stage manager, technicians, and more, in true learning-by-doing experiences. The play is directed by Larry Brazill and costumes are by guest artist Bethany Mason.

Based on an actual event, the play was chosen as a way to raise awareness and prevention of sexual assault. By providing an optional “talk back session” after each performance facilitated by UMW Student Counseling Services, the audience will have the opportunity to ask questions and talk about this important issue.

According to Brazill, “It explores the variety of reactions among the community and the individuals who were actually involved. It is much more than a didactic fable with a moralistic ending. It is the story of how a major incident like this affects the lives of the characters. It is also incredibly relevant in that it brings to light the role of technology and social media to our culture. I hope that this play will generate productive discussions about this relevant subject, and lead to a deeper understanding and knowledge of ways to help and support others.”

The content in “Good Kids” is similar to that of an “R” rated film due to its mature themes. The play is not recommended for children as it contains subject matter that may be emotionally triggering and is accompanied by strong, suggestive language.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for seniors and free for Montana Western students. For more information, please email [email protected], or call (406) 683-7038.
