Montana Western Celebrates National TRIO Day

February 24, 2022

Students from Montana Western’s TRIO program will participate in the 2022 National TRIO Day of Service on February 28 to express appreciation to the community for its support of TRIO programs. National TRIO Day is a day of celebration, reflection, and action around increased access to higher education for disadvantaged students.

TRIO Student Support Services

For more than 50 years, federal TRIO programs across the country have been providing valuable support services to help first-generation students and students from low-income families, veterans, and students with disabilities, enter and graduate from college. Today more than 1,000 colleges, universities, and community agencies host more than 2,800 TRIO projects that serve more than 800,000 young people and adults. TRIO serves students of all racial and ethnic backgrounds. For millions of students from low-income families who strive to be the first in their families to attend and graduate from college, the seven federally funded programs that form TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) are making a world of difference.

While student financial aid programs help students overcome financial hurdles to higher education, TRIO programs recognize the importance of overcoming all barriers to success. Maggie Lund, a junior Psychology major in the Montana Western TRIO program, says “I like the extra support I get, not just in academics, but in life in general as well.”

Now in its 17th year, Montana Western’s TRIO SSS program currently helps 160 students work toward collegiate success.

TRIO services at the University of Montana Western include:

  • Tutoring
  • Peer-to-Peer mentoring for first-year students
  • Pre-semester Accelerator Program
  • First-Year Program
  • Personal and financial counseling
  • Career counseling
  • Assistance in applying to graduate school
  • Specialized workshops
  • Assistance in applying for financial aid

“I appreciate that TRIO at UMW is a holistic program,” notes Dr. Laura Wright of the English Department. “It’s more than just providing academic advising in that it also includes personalized support and financial aid guidance. TRIO serves the whole student.”

This Monday, February 28, TRIO Student Support Services will be holding a tabling event in the Lucy Carson Library from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. The university and area community is invited to stop by to meet the inspiring students in the program, learn more about the services that TRIO SSS offers, and create a custom button to show their support.
