Brigid Reedy is a freshman at the University of Montana Western double majoring in Natural Horsemanship and English.
Reedy grew up on a small ranch in the community of Waterloo, Mont., with her younger brother and parents. Since a young age, Reedy has had a passion for music and poetry and has been performing for nearly as long as she can remember. Featured at the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko, Nevada for the past seven years, Reedy has become a singular young voice representing her beloved home state of Montana.
“Brigid is credited in recent books by Aaron Parrett and Charlie Seeman as an important singer, songwriter, fiddler and poet carrying forward classic cowboy music and poetry and rich Montana fiddle traditions with her exceptional musicianship, distinctive approach to repertoire, and her strong sense of place. A natural and charismatic performer since the age of two, Brigid has traveled far beyond the hills of Montana to perform and share the stage with many personal heroes (of both music and poetry), bringing with her boundless enthusiasm, grace, passion and soul. Now nineteen, Brigid’s writing draws considerably from her experience as a young woman coming of age in the contemporary rural West. This, combined with her timeless, eclectic taste in music and love of words, makes her a force in Western Americana music and poetry,” Reedy’s website states.
Reedy has been featured in an article from The Wall Street Journal titled “Cowboy Culture, Alive and Well” and appeared on the cover of “Alta” magazine. Reedy and her brother, Johnny, have recently released their newest CD titled “Next Go ‘Round.”
“Recorded in the historic Round Barn in Twin Bridges, Montana, Next Go ‘Round highlights a unique sibling collaboration while showcasing the confluence of varied musical, cultural and traditional styles through their unique lens,” Reedy states.
Double majoring in both Natural Horsemanship and English, Reedy says that she has enjoyed Montana Western’s flexible Block program that allows her to take one course at a time and really dive into a study area while also being able to work on her writing and music. Currently, Reedy is participating in an independent study where she is learning leatherwork from master saddle-maker, George Holt, which Reedy has described as “like being in a poem.”
After graduation, Reedy says she has plans for “more of everything,” meaning she wants to continue performing, making music, writing poetry and staying connected with the people she’s met on campus.
