Students and Community Invited to Series of Events

Students and community members are invited to attend an array of upcoming events at Montana Western to help kick off the spring semester. Events include a community blood drive, a Pint Night Fundraiser, and a Dances with Words production.

Montana Western Blood Drive

The blood drive will be held on Jan. 14, 2019 from 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. in the Ketlz Arena. It is open to the public. To register for the blood drive, please contact Vitalant at 877-258-4825 or visit their website www.bloodhero.com and click on the “Donate Blood” tab. Enter the sponsor code: umwestern when prompted. Walk-ins are welcome but pre-registration is preferred.

“The Lucky Ones” Opening Reception

On Jan. 17, 2019 the Fine Arts Gallery will have an opening reception for “The Lucky Ones” featuring artist, photographer, and Montana Western Alumna, Madeline Scott.

“The Lucky Ones” is a carefully curated photo exhibit featuring refugee arrivals and families reunited at the Boise airport between February and May 2017. The exhibit also features images of these same families six to nine months later, showing how they are integrating into daily life in their new home.

An Associated Panel on Refugee Resettlement will also be held on Jan. 17, prior to the reception. Panelists to include: Helena Mayor Wilmont Collins, Soft Landings Missoula Executive Director Mary Poole, and Resettlement Director for the International Rescue Committee Jen Barile.

A luncheon with the panelists will take place at the Multicultural Center in the SUB basement from 12-1:30 p.m., this luncheon is open to the public. The panel will then hold their discussion from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the STC Great Room. The opening reception for the exhibit will take place at the Corr Gallery from 6-7 p.m. All of these events take place on the UMW Campus.

Pint Night Fundraiser

On Jan. 18, 2019 from 5-8 p.m. there will be a Pint Night Fundraiser held at Beaverhead Brewery. The event will also include live music and a silent auction. A portion of every beer sold will be used to help fund the Montana Western International Study Abroad trip to Iceland taking place in March, 2019.

Dances with Words Event

Lowell Jaeger, a poet from Kalispell, Mont. will share works of poetry on Jan. 24, 2019 at The Cup, located in the basement of the library on the UMW campus.

“Dances with Words” is produced by English Professor Alan Weltzien. The series, free and open to the public, provides the community with a unique opportunity to listen to writers reading their own works, including Montana Western student writers. All performances start at 7:30 p.m.
