UMW Foundation Honors 125th Anniversary with Gift of Chancellor’s Medallion

May 3, 2019

Montana Western’s 122nd Annual Commencement Ceremony, to be held on Saturday, May 11 at 11:00 a.m. in the Straugh Gymnasium, will mark the introduction of the University of Montana Western Chancellor’s Medallion.

Chancellor's Medallion
The University of Montana Western Foundation has gifted Montana Western with the Chancellor’s Medallion, in honor of UMW’s 125th anniversary.

Donated by the University of Montana Western Foundation, the medallion features the seal of the University of Montana Western. The elements in the seal were inspired by the unique beauty of the landscape in Southwest Montana. The medallion, struck in silver and plated in gold, was made by Medalcraft Mint Inc., located in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Dating back to the middle ages, the Chain of Office, anchored by the Chancellor’s Medallion, is a traditional part of the regalia of university presidents and chancellors that is worn during formal academic functions including commencement. Chancellor Beth Weatherby will be the first to wear the University of Montana Western Chain of Office and Chancellor’s Medallion during this year’s ceremony.

“As the chair of the Montana Western Foundation Board of Directors, I am pleased that we can celebrate the 125th anniversary of the University with such a beautiful gift to be enjoyed by all when it is worn proudly by the Chancellor,” said Deb Creger.

“The Foundation was thrilled to present this gift to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the University that will be passed from chancellor to chancellor in perpetuity,” said University of Montana Western Foundation Director, Roxanne Engellant.
